Blood unit processing

Trace a blood unit from its donation through receipt and processing.

Step by step

  1. Prepare the unit record Licensed Clinician

The Licensed Clinician selects the donation and records the component type and accession number. Start at Ordered when the record represents planned collection. Check the identifier against the team's collection procedure before work proceeds.

    • Establish donation and accession references
    • Updates Blood units, Donations
  2. Record collection Licensed Clinician

The Licensed Clinician enters the actual collection time and marks the unit Collected. Confirm that the record points to the donation that produced it. Keep the accession number visible during the receiving handoff so the next colleague can identify the same unit.

    • Record collection time and Collected state
    • Updates Blood units
  3. Confirm receipt Licensed Clinician

The Licensed Clinician checks the arriving unit against the accession number and records Received after the physical handoff. Review the Collected Blood Units screen for units whose current state needs attention before further processing.

    • Record Received after the handoff
    • Updates Blood units
  4. Record the processing outcome Licensed Clinician and Clinical Reviewer

The Licensed Clinician records Tested when the applicable testing work has occurred, or Rejected when processing rejects the unit. The Clinical Reviewer reads the donation-linked observations as part of the team's review. Apply the organization's clinical release procedure separately from this handling record.

    • Record Tested or Rejected and inspect supporting observations
    • Updates Blood units, Laboratory tests, Donations

Where it usually breaks

And how to keep it from happening.

  • Identifier confusion. A component description can appear on different donations. Check the accession number and donation together.
  • Early receipt entry. Agree who confirms the physical handoff before the record becomes Received.
  • Ambiguous testing evidence. Laboratory observations belong to donations. Confirm the team's matching procedure before using those observations in a unit review.
