Issue triage and verification

Triage eligible issues, follow the assigned response and examine fixes before verification.

Step by step

  1. Raise the concern Project Manager

Developer, QA Engineer or Project Manager prepares the issue title, project and severity. Include the reporter's explanation so the next owner can understand the affected work before triage is requested.

    • Prepare an issue with severity and context
    • Updates Issues, Projects, Team members
  2. Run triage Project Manager

Developer, QA Engineer or Project Manager sets the existing issue to Open to request triage. The action checks that the issue remains Open and has severity, then records Triaged and an operation receipt. Missing severity or another state blocks triage and records the failed attempt.

    • Record Open → Triaged or a failed attempt
    • Updates Issues, Operation receipts
  3. Assign follow-through Project Manager

Project Manager agrees the issue owner and priority of the response with the people doing the work. Move the issue into progress under the team's operating procedure when the response begins.

    • Identify the owner and start the response
    • Updates Issues, Team members, Tasks
  4. Examine the fix QA Engineer

The responsible person records Fixed when the correction is ready. QA Engineer examines the result and its supporting evidence before recording Verified under the agreed verification procedure.

    • Review Fixed work before recording Verified
    • Updates Issues, Record attachments
  5. Revisit the delivery consequence Project Manager

Project Manager closes resolved work when the team's criteria are met and checks the affected task, milestone and resource concern. Bring any changed commitment into the next capacity review.

    • Close resolved work and review remaining commitments
    • Updates Issues, Tasks, Milestones, Risks

Where it usually breaks

And how to keep it from happening.

  • Severity is omitted. Read the failed triage attempt, add the appropriate severity and retry from an eligible Open issue.
  • A fixed issue is treated as verified. Keep the QA Engineer's examination in the handoff before changing the verification state.
  • The issue is resolved but the plan is stale. Check the affected assignment and milestone before assuming the original dates still hold.
