What you can do
Start with the charge
A cost review begins with a daily charge, not a chart total. The Cloud Cost Analyst checks the provider, cloud account, service name, usage date, cost center and US dollar amount on each line. These details let the team distinguish a real increase from a duplicate import or a charge assigned to the wrong owner. The Business Overview page puts recent cost evidence beside the current incident distribution so a reviewer can move from a change in spend to the working record.
A service owner can use the same line to ask a focused question: did this service run more work on that day, or was the cost center assignment wrong? The analyst records the answer against the relevant incident when investigation is needed. The line remains the source amount; the incident captures the work and decision around it.
How the work is organized
- Daily evidence. Group charges by usage date, provider, account and service before explaining a movement.
- Allocation context. Check the cost center on the charge against account allocation rules and asset ownership.
- Exception trail. Connect an unusual line to an incident and retain the anomaly and updates that explain it.
What to agree during setup
Choose a source for daily billing lines and a consistent account name for every provider. Decide who checks whether incoming dates use the same billing convention. Cost center codes should match the codes reviewed by Finance Manager and Cost Center Owner. If a shared charge needs distribution, record the rule and review interval before treating its allocation as settled.
Start with one account and one service. Load a short period of charges, inspect the totals against the provider record, and ask the owner to explain one movement. This gives the team a concrete acceptance case before adding more accounts.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Suppose a compute service shows a higher charge on Tuesday. The analyst opens the line, checks its account, usage date and cost center, and compares it with the service owner’s account assignment. If the charge is unexpected, the analyst opens an incident and links the cost evidence. The owner checks whether a resource change explains the amount. The Finance Manager reviews whether the allocation rule assigns that charge to the right budget owner. The case is complete when the amount, owner and explanation remain traceable together.

What it keeps track of
Data model- Cloud cost lines
- Represents a single line of cloud spend for a day, the core record the team uses to analyze costs.
- Cloud accounts
- Represents a cloud provider account the company pays for, tracked for ownership and contract renewal.
- Account cost centers
- Defines how spend on a cloud account is allocated to a cost center, and how often that's reviewed.
- Cost center allocations
- A record of an asset being assigned to a cost center, used to track who pays for what and for how long.
- Incidents
- Represents a service problem being worked, tracked from open to resolution by whoever's assigned.
