What you can do
Keep the due work with the case
A case can be active while a filing or correction is due on a specific date. Matter deadlines holds a title, due date, owner, status and source matter for that work. The Matter Coordinator can assign it to a named team member and keep the action visible beside the case. The source matter link matters: it allows a reader to move from an isolated due item to the current case, evidence and review decision.
The deadline record distinguishes open work from work in progress, completed work and cancelled work. Completion has a date and a resolution, so a team member can explain what happened rather than merely clearing a queue. A cancelled item also needs to remain associated with its source case for later review. The legal team decides the actual filing obligation and its governing date; the application records the operational assignment and outcome.
How the work is organized
- Assignment. Name the action and due date, then assign one team member who can follow it through.
- Daily review. Use the open list and the due-date view to find work that needs attention before the next handoff.
- Resolution. Record the completion date and the result on the same deadline instead of removing a finished item.
What to agree during setup
Decide who enters deadlines when a matter opens, which person owns a filing versus an internal review, and how the team checks dates against its authoritative source. Agree how a revised due date is communicated and how an old obligation remains explainable. Define who may mark a deadline completed and what a useful resolution should say. The due date is an operational field; it should reflect the date the legal team has confirmed for the case.
Suppose an active matter has a document due next week. The coordinator adds the deadline, assigns a team member and attaches the relevant source evidence to the matter. The assigned owner sees it in their own list. When the filing is handled, the coordinator records the resolution and completion time. The next reviewer can still tell what was due, who carried it and how it ended.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Follow a reviewed matter whose delivery later changes. The correction path preserves the old revision and creates an explicit compensating deadline when a delivered outcome is superseded. Confirm that the new due item points to the same matter, has its own owner and is visible in the open work list. Then inspect the earlier completion and decision history. Neither the new task nor its due date should erase the result that led to the correction.
