Who it's for

Internal IT database teams

An internal IT team often responds to database issues while maintaining other service assets. Database Administration connects the database inventory with its host assets, service ownership and operational work. A responder can begin with an incident's service and asset, then find the database and backup record relevant to that host.

How Database Administration is set up for you

Service mapping

Keep the service owner and criticality current so changes and incidents reach the right people.

Investigation history

Record incident acknowledgment and authored updates, then keep recurring causes under a problem owner.

Planned work

Review change risk, planned start and end, and rollback plan before implementation.

Requested work

Route submitted service requests to an approver before fulfillment starts.

An internal IT team often responds to database issues while maintaining other service assets. Database Administration connects the database inventory with its host assets, service ownership and operational work. A responder can begin with an incident's service and asset, then find the database and backup record relevant to that host.

Choose an internal service with an established owner. Register its host asset and the database instance on that host. Have the database administrator check the engine, version and owner, then record a recent backup outcome. A backup reviewer checks the restore-test evidence for a completed run. The team can now trace the service from an instance to a host and a real operating record.

Run a separate rehearsal for a service interruption. Open an incident with the affected asset, assign a responder and record the actual acknowledgment time. Add an update describing the investigation. If the issue appears again, give the service manager a problem record with a statement and owner. This preserves the immediate response and the longer investigation as separate work.
