Engineering change to effective revision

Assess part, bill and routing changes before applying the reviewed revision.

Step by step

  1. Define the requested change Production Planner

Production Planner creates an engineering change request identifying the product, requester, request date, reason and description. Draft advances to Defined only when the intended engineering edit can be explained. Identify the affected bill of materials and routing without assuming their current definitions can be silently replaced.

    • Engineering request defined
    • Updates Engineering change orders, Products
  2. Assess supply and cost Buyer or Accountant or Production Planner

Buyer checks supplier-item terms and suppliers for the proposed component requirement. Accountant reviews cost rollups and cost standards. Production Planner records the engineering cost effect and reviews affected work orders before Defined advances to Assessed.

    • Supply and cost reviewed
    • Updates Supplier items, Cost rollups, Cost standards, Work orders
  3. Approve the assessed scope Approver

Approver checks the requested change and supporting reviews through the agreed independent action. The approval record identifies the engineering change, deciding person, decision date and reason. An accepted decision permits engineering change requests to move Assessed to Approved; rejection remains a separate Rejected result.

    • Independent decision recorded
    • Updates Approvals, Engineering change orders
ApprovalA person approves before the work moves on.
  4. Apply the reviewed revision Production Planner

Production Planner applies the approved change on its effective date and checks the bill version, the dates when it applies and the routing version. Review the bill, issued material and completed operations of released work before altering its execution requirements. Keep the earlier production evidence available for comparison.

    • Reviewed revision applied
    • Updates Bill of materials, BOM components, Routings, Routing operations
  5. Verify affected production Quality Inspector or Production Planner

Quality Inspector checks the applicable inspection evidence for the affected product. Production Planner records the result through the agreed action, moving Applied to Verified only after the review. Accountant separately reviews any pending cost activation and its revaluation entry.

    • Affected output verified
    • Updates Quality inspections, Engineering change orders

Where it usually breaks

And how to keep it from happening.

  • Cost review points to a different bill or routing from the approval request.
  • An unapproved change is applied to fix a shortage quickly.
  • The planner applies the routing version without checking the approved change date.
  • A change rewrites the requirements of work already issued or completed without review.
