What you can do
Build a controlled sellable unit
A distributor may combine stock products into a kit or repack goods for a different selling unit. The output product has an effective bill of materials, a declared output quantity basis and a routing. Components state required base quantities and allowed planned scrap. The routing carries ordered instructions and labor or overhead bases. These records make the work order’s expected material and cost understandable before stock is issued.
Warehouse Manager releases a work order for a positive planned quantity only after its output, bill, routing, warehouse and cost standard have been checked. The released revision freezes the source basis. A later change to the master recipe does not silently change work already authorized. Order-linked work stays tied to the original dealer line when the kit was prepared for a specific commitment.
How the work is organized
- Recipe. Bill of materials and routing define what is consumed and what can be completed.
- Execution. Work order operations, component issues and production logs record actual work.
- Output. Completion records accept terminal output and allocate actual work-in-progress cost.
Production log entries distinguish good quantity, scrap and labor hours. Intermediate operation counts are progress evidence; they are not all added together as finished output. A terminal completion is the point at which accepted stock is created. Material issue, return, labor and overhead entries remain linked to the work order for variance review.
What to agree during setup
Agree which product kinds represent a kit or repacked output, the base unit and the effective recipe version. Choose the warehouse and output location, planned scrap rate, cost standard and the person who checks a release. Decide who records each operation and who independently accepts it. Finance Manager should agree the threshold and evidence for residual variance at close.
For a promotional set, avoid treating a discount record as a manufacturing recipe. The kit’s actual components and output basis belong in the bill of materials and work order. Commercial pricing remains on the dealer offer and order. This keeps the shop work, customer promise and invoice amount separate.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Prepare a work order for a dealer kit using two stocked items. Release it against an active recipe, issue a bounded quantity of each component and record actual good and scrap output. Try to complete more than the available material or planned scope; review the rejected attempt. Accept a partial completion and compare standard output value with actual allocated cost. Return unused material, then ask Finance Manager to review any residual variance before closing the work order.
What your team sees
- Work order schedule — Released and active jobs with output, manager and planned interval.
- Available lot stock — Components that can be issued from an eligible stock position.
- Count schedule — Counts that may affect the location before material issue.
Follow the work through
Use assembly release to output. Check stock and transfers for eligible material and finance and collections for posted value.
What it keeps track of
Data model- Bill of materials
- Effective distribution assembly/repacking recipes with explicit output basis.
- BOM components
- Component quantities per explicit output basis, preserving dimensions and allowed loss.
- Routings
- Versioned assembly/repacking instructions, distinct from delivery routes.
- Routing operations
- Ordered work instructions and declared labour/overhead bases.
- Work orders
- Released bounded assembly/kitting/repacking, without plant APS or payroll scope.
- Work order components
- Frozen required input and actual traced issue/return scope.
- Work order operations
- Frozen instructions and assigned actual work.
- Production log
- Actual operation throughput, scrap and labour evidence; intermediate counts do not sum to output.
- Production completions
- Accepted terminal output and WIP cost allocation, once per actual completed scope.
- Work order cost entries
- Immutable WIP debit/credit sources and bounded actual-cost allocation.
- Products
- Trade goods and assembly outputs; master values do not rewrite transactions.
- Cost standards
- Entity/product standard per base unit with immutable effective versions.
Who uses it
Permissions- Warehouse Manager
- Releases and oversees the job.
- Warehouse Operator
- Records component and operation facts.
- Finance Manager
- Reviews cost and close exceptions.
- Accountant
- Checks the related work-in-progress and stock entries.
- Sales Representative
- Follows any linked dealer commitment.
