What you can do
Release bounded kitting and repacking work against frozen instructions
A distributor may combine purchased items into a saleable kit or repackage stock into another product unit. The bill of material records input quantities against an explicit output basis. Routing operations state the sequence, instructions and labor or overhead basis. Effective versions matter: the work order freezes the bill, routing, output product and standard cost selected for this run.
Warehouse Manager reviews planned quantity and manager evidence before an independent production release decision. Work order components retain required inputs, actual issues, returns and consumption. Assigned operations collect start and end evidence, good output, scrap and labor hours. Intermediate operation totals are progress records; accepted terminal output determines the completed stock quantity.
The completion record allocates actual work-in-progress cost to accepted output. Remaining variance requires review before close. This makes a partially completed kit run visible without creating finished inventory from a started operation or losing the cost of unused materials. Sales can then fulfill the dealer order from posted finished stock according to the normal reservation and delivery rules.
How the work is organized
- Prepare. Warehouse Manager chooses the active bill of material, routing, output product and standard cost for a planned kit quantity.
- Release. An independent authorized reviewer checks the frozen work order and records the production release decision before materials are issued.
- Complete. Warehouse Operator records actual component use and operation entries; the reviewed terminal completion alone adds finished stock.
What to agree during setup
Agree active recipe versions, output basis, permissible scrap, assigned operators and cost review ownership. Run a small kit before expanding to other products. Keep the decision owner separate from the preparer for controlled releases. Use a real sample that includes a correction, so the operating team sees where the original record remains available.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Release a work order for a kit, issue the bounded inputs, record an operation and accept partial terminal output. Confirm only posted completion raises finished stock. Review residual cost before closing the order. Ask the next owner to trace the source, decision and actual event in order. Compare the remaining quantity and value after each partial action. Record the person who resolved an exception and the evidence they used.
What your team sees
- Work orders for release — Planned runs awaiting review of their output, quantity and instructions.
- Pick tasks in progress — Assigned component and order picks that need actual quantity or exception follow-up.

What it keeps track of
Data model- Bill of materials
- Effective distribution assembly/repacking recipes with explicit output basis.
- BOM components
- Component quantities per explicit output basis, preserving dimensions and allowed loss.
- Routings
- Versioned assembly/repacking instructions, distinct from delivery routes.
- Routing operations
- Ordered work instructions and declared labour/overhead bases.
- Work orders
- Released bounded assembly/kitting/repacking, without plant APS or payroll scope.
- Work order components
- Frozen required input and actual traced issue/return scope.
- Work order operations
- Frozen instructions and assigned actual work.
- Production log
- Actual operation throughput, scrap and labour evidence; intermediate counts do not sum to output.
- Production completions
- Accepted terminal output and WIP cost allocation, once per actual completed scope.
- Work order cost entries
- Immutable WIP debit/credit sources and bounded actual-cost allocation.
Who uses it
Permissions- Warehouse Manager
- Plans the run and owns warehouse execution.
- Warehouse Operator
- Records component and operation facts.
- Accountant
- Examines allocated cost and Finance Manager reviews the financial exception before close.
