Clinic with lab referrals
Some visits lead to a specimen that moves through collection, receipt and testing. The clinic can keep the patient encounter and the specimen's accession reference together, then use care tasks for patient follow-up when a result or rejection requires action.
How Eye Care / Optometry is set up for you
Collection record
The Licensed Clinician links specimen type and collection date to the encounter.
Handling status
The team tracks whether the specimen was ordered, collected, received, tested or rejected.
Review context
The Clinical Reviewer sees specimen progress beside the encounter's note and observations.
Patient action
The Clinical Coordinator assigns a care task when a rejected specimen needs repeat collection or a patient contact.
Some visits lead to a specimen that moves through collection, receipt and testing. The clinic can keep the patient encounter and the specimen's accession reference together, then use care tasks for patient follow-up when a result or rejection requires action.
Agree the specimen types used by the clinic and which lab issues accession numbers. Decide how the clinic receives proof of receipt and testing, and who updates the corresponding status. Rehearse a collection from an actual visit, a lab receipt with accession reference and a rejected specimen that generates follow-up. The status should reflect the external event the team has confirmed.
The external lab remains the source of its own test result and handling evidence. During implementation, agree how that information is shared with the clinic and how staff match the result to the accession reference. Keep a rejected specimen in the record while the care task records the next patient action.
Use Specimens in process for daily follow-up and Current care tasks for work assigned after a rejection. The reviewer can inspect the encounter context before deciding whether the visit's clinical documentation is complete. The coordinator can schedule a distinct return encounter if a repeat collection needs another patient visit.
