Reading to consumption

Review meter evidence before accepting consumption for an actual operating interval.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the meter Admin

Admin checks the site's timezone and the meter's energy type, unit and reading mode. Meter Operator confirms that the physical meter matches the register before entering the observation.

    • Establish site and reading basis
    • Updates Sites, Meters
  2. Capture the observation Meter Operator

Meter Operator enters the reading time, value and quality flag. Validation checks the actor, meter, time and quality, including whether the value is nonnegative. Rejected observations return with a correction reason.

    • Record observation and validation outcome
    • Updates Meter readings, Meters
  3. Review the reading Energy Manager

Energy Manager approves the use of the observation after examining its quality and validation result. An estimated reading remains visibly estimated during this decision. The operator corrects rejected evidence and presents it for review again.

    • Decide whether the observation can support review
    • Updates Meter readings
ApprovalA person approves before the work moves on.
  4. Review the interval Energy Manager

Energy Manager checks the actual consumption start and end against the observations. Confirm the unit and ensure the accepted period does not overlap another interval counted for that meter. Move an acceptable interval from Received to Validated; reject an unusable interval.

    • Move Received to Validated or Rejected
    • Updates Energy intervals, Meter readings
  5. Hand off accepted consumption Cost Analyst

Cost Analyst selects the validated period for the intended rate or allocation comparison. The handoff retains the meter and unit so the analyst can explain the quantity's operating scope.

    • Select comparable consumption
    • Updates Energy intervals, Meters

Where it usually breaks

And how to keep it from happening.

  • An estimated reading loses its quality distinction when the team discusses a consumption total. Retain the flag during reviewer approval.
  • Adjacent intervals overlap, so part of the same consumption could be counted twice. Compare boundaries before acceptance.
  • A source date is interpreted in a different timezone. Confirm the site's convention with the observation source.
