What you can do
Read margin in its delivery context
The Installation Margin Desk opens the installation engagement behind each margin signal. It compares contract value with delivered and billed amounts, showing realization, projected margin and over-budget signals. A director reviewing a concerning result can inspect the engagement’s dates, budget hours, service lines, milestone amounts and expenses before deciding what to address. The desk is an operating review surface for installation work rather than a replacement for finance reconciliation.
Several engagement fields answer distinct questions. Delivered amount and hours reflect work recorded against the installation. Approved service amount and invoiced service amount describe different work order states. Delivered cost, expense total and gross margin give context for delivery performance. Remaining to bill and contract consumed percentage help the team discuss commercial exposure while milestone payments show the collection position.
How the work is organized
- Baseline. Contract value and budget hours are entered on the installation engagement before delivery begins.
- Execution. Work orders, technician hours and expenses link to the same engagement, allowing value and effort to be reviewed together.
- Billing position. Milestones and linked payments carry their own amounts and statuses; operation receipts identify invoice and collection actions.
What to agree during setup
Decide which installation manager owns the commercial baseline and who may revise it. Agree when the Field Operations Director reviews over-budget signals and how a manager records the action taken. The field team should check that technicians use the right engagement on every work order, time entry and expense, because a misplaced line affects the economic picture for two installations.
Review technician cost and bill rates before relying on margin calculations. The rates live on the technician record and feed service-line economics. The director should also distinguish delivered work from approved and invoiced work. A high delivered amount with a lower approved amount points to work order review; a lower billed amount points to billing follow-up. Each question has a different source record and owner.
Check the handoff on an actual case
An active installation has a contract value and budget hours. Several technicians have entered service lines and time. The Installation Manager checks the approved work order list and confirms that each line has the right engagement. The Field Operations Director then opens the Installation Margin Desk and drills into the installation record to compare delivered amount, cost and hours with the baseline.
If hours burn is high, the director asks the manager to inspect the dated time entries and service descriptions. If approved work remains uninvoiced, the Billing Coordinator checks the relevant milestone and payment records. A successful milestone invoice operation moves that milestone to Invoiced, while collection is reflected later by a payment marked Received. Keeping these questions separate lets the team respond to the actual cause of the signal.
What your team sees
- Active Installation Engagements — Open each live installation to review its contract, hours and delivery totals.
- Approved Not Invoiced — Inspect accepted service lines when billed value lags delivered work.
- Milestone Collection Queue — Follow invoiced and overdue payments linked to milestones.
Follow the work through
Use delivery review for the operating review and milestone to collection for billing follow-up.
