What you can do

Record delivered work and check submitted service lines before billing

Each service line carries a date, description, hours, rate, billable flag, engagement and team member. Its amount and delivery cost support the margin view. A consultant can prepare a draft and submit it for review. The service approval operation checks a submitted line before it reaches Approved; the review decision and operation result remain visible beside the work.

How the work is organized

The consultant describes the work. The service approval operation checks submitted lines; the service reviewer investigates failures. The engagement manager checks how approved value affects the engagement. A billing coordinator can use Approved Not Invoiced to see service value that still needs attention.

  • Submitted work. Keep the service line tied to the correct engagement and person.
  • Guarded decision. Only billable lines with hours and an engagement pass Service Entry Approval.
  • Recorded result. Use review decisions and operation receipts to trace the approval result.

What to agree during setup

Agree what description is sufficient to support billing and whether rate changes require a new service line. Set who may review a consultant’s work and how rejected work is corrected. Rehearse a valid billable line alongside a line with zero hours and a missing engagement; the latter cases must remain submitted with failed operation evidence.

Check the handoff on an actual case

An engineer records six hours of delivered work for an active client engagement and submits the line. The service approval operation finds the billable flag, hours and engagement, marks the line approved and records the decision and successful receipt. A second line without an engagement does not advance; the failed receipt gives the reviewer a concrete exception to return to the consultant. The manager sees the approved amount against delivered value in Engagement Margin.

Before submission, the consultant compares the description with the hours and checks that the person and engagement match the delivered work. The consultant corrects a missing link or hours on the source line, then submits the case for another check. The failed receipt remains part of the history.

At the end of a review period, inspect the submitted queue for lines that did not advance. A Failed receipt points to a specific guard issue; a Submitted line is still waiting for a valid approval. Compare the approved amount with the engagement total before the billing coordinator uses it. Keep the work date and team member on the source line visible during this check.
