What you can do
Use the approved benefit as the payment boundary
Benefit settlement joins the claim, the authorized benefit decision and each payment event. Finance Reconciler records the amount, paid date and provider event identifier, then checks whether that event is verified. The total of verified payments must remain within the approved benefit. A claim should be marked settled only after real paid evidence exists and the payment trail reconciles to the decision.
A decision to approve a benefit does not itself mean a payment occurred. The claim may be approved while finance waits for the payment provider’s confirmation. Multiple payments can be associated with one decision, so each event needs a unique identity and the remaining eligible amount must be checked before accepting the next one. A repeated provider event should point to the existing payment rather than increase the total again.
How the work is organized
- Find the decision. Start with a claim whose benefit was approved and read the approved amount and reason.
- Check the event. Match the provider event, amount and paid date to the intended claim and decision.
- Confirm settlement. Sum verified payments and change the claim status only when paid evidence supports completion.
What to agree during setup
Agree which payment provider or finance system is the source of paid confirmation. Define how event identifiers remain stable across retries and imports. Set the rule for partial payments: staff should see the unused approved benefit after each verified event. Decide who investigates an unverified event, a conflicting amount or a payment linked to the wrong decision.
The insurer should distinguish premium money received for a policy from a benefit paid for a claim. Both records have amounts and provider events, but they answer different questions. Finance Reconciler should reconcile each to its own source and preserve the original event identifier when a correction is needed.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Claims Decision Reviewer approves a $600 benefit. The payment provider sends a $400 paid event, which Finance Reconciler links to that claim and decision and verifies. The remaining eligible benefit is $200. A later $200 event can be accepted after its provider identity and paid evidence are checked. The first verified $400 event supplies paid evidence for settlement, provided the team has reconciled the claim and decision. The second event uses the remaining eligible benefit. If the same $400 event arrives again, it should resolve to the existing record; it must not produce a $1,000 aggregate.
Rehearse a proposed $250 second payment. The cumulative verified total would exceed the authorized benefit, so the case requires investigation before verification or settlement. Rehearse an unverified payment record too: its presence does not count as paid evidence. Keep an operation receipt for the attempted settlement and resolve any mismatch by checking the persisted payment effects.
What your team sees
- Payment verification queue — Check provider events waiting for finance confirmation.
- Approved claims awaiting settlement — Find benefit decisions that still need paid evidence.
