Metric definition to approval

Draft, approve and retire metric definition versions before results are calculated against them.

Step by step

  1. Set the outcome definition Metric Steward

Metric Steward records the outcome definition with its code, organization, effective dates and policy reference, and marks it active. The policy reference names the measure specification the organization follows.

    • Measure scope and dates recorded
    • Updates Outcome definitions
  2. Draft the metric Metric Steward

Metric Steward drafts a metric definition against that outcome definition with its grain, numerator and denominator expressions, unit, aggregation method and version. The draft stays at Draft and is not used to calculate results until it is approved.

    • Draft version prepared
    • Updates Metric definitions
  3. Map the source fields Data Engineer

Data Engineer records the source mappings the metric depends on, with source and target fields, types, the transform rule and the date the mapping takes effect.

    • Field mapping versioned
    • Updates Source mappings
  4. Approve the version Metric Steward

A Metric Steward other than the author checks the expressions against the policy reference and approves the version, moving Status: Draft → Approved and recording themselves as the reviewer.

    • Version approved with reviewer
    • Updates Metric definitions
ApprovalA person approves before the work moves on.
  5. Retire the earlier version Metric Steward

When an approved version replaces another, Metric Steward moves the earlier one Status: Approved → Retired. Results calculated against it keep their link to that version.

    • Earlier version retired, results kept
    • Updates Metric definitions, Metric results

Where it usually breaks

And how to keep it from happening.

  • The author approves their own draft, so nobody else has checked the expressions.
  • An approved version is edited in place and older results lose the formula that produced them.
  • A source mapping changes without a new version or effective date, and a rate shifts with no recorded cause.
  • The outcome definition's effective dates do not cover the cohort window, so results are calculated outside the measure's scope.
