What you can do
Make the credit decision explainable
Underwriting reviews hold the assessment attached to a loan application. Their status, revision, applicant, submission time and decision time show how the review progressed. A Credit Officer prepares the case. An Independent Credit Approver records a separate decision with a reviewer, time, reason and source revision. The decision can approve, reject or return the request. Keeping that decision apart from the application makes the human authority visible.
The application and review each have their own status. The reviewer should know which application revision is being decided and which underwriting record supports it. A review marked submitted is ready for the independent decision; an approved review is different from a provider confirmed application. A return sends the case back for further work. A rejection explains why the requested lending action did not proceed.
How the work is organized
- Assessment record. The underwriting review stays linked to its parent application and organization.
- Independent actor. The review decision identifies the person who decided, the decision and the reason.
- Revision check. The source revision anchors the decision to the version actually reviewed.
What to agree during setup
Define the evidence and review notes the Credit Officer should have ready before submission. Decide when the officer creates a new review revision and when a returned case can be resubmitted. Set the organization’s rule for independent reviewers, including how to handle an unavailable approver without letting the case owner approve their own work.
Agree how the approver compares the requested amount and borrower context with the underwriting record. The team should also decide how to handle a stale revision: the reviewer requests a fresh submission rather than treating a past decision as authority over a changed amount. Keep the reason concrete enough for the officer to act on and for an Auditor to understand later.
Check the handoff on an actual case
The Credit Officer submits an underwriting review for a borrower whose requested amount has been revised. The approver opens the application and sees the current revision, the borrower, the amount and the supporting attachments. They record a return decision with a reason because the evidence needs clarification. The officer updates the case and submits again. On approval, the new decision points to the reviewed revision and the reviewer. The earlier return remains part of the history; it is not overwritten to make the case appear to have passed on its first review.
