What you can do
Agree what a number means
A production resource identifies the measurement context for an organization, with effective dates and a policy reference. Metric definitions add the name, grain, numerator and denominator expressions, unit, aggregation method, version and approval status. Source mappings connect named source fields to target fields, with types, a transform rule, effective date and definition reference. The team can therefore inspect the meaning of a result before comparing it across dates or units.
The Metric Steward prepares a definition. An Independent Reviewer checks the grain and expressions before changing it from Draft to Approved. A later Retired status keeps the definition visible for older results. This is a person-led decision: the fields record who reviewed the definition, while the source and results preserve which definition was used. The steward can see the approval queue and the analyst can browse approved definitions before working on a result.
How the work is organized
- Production context. An organization owns the resource definition and its effective window.
- Metric rule. A definition records expression, aggregation and version with a status.
- Field mapping. Each mapping identifies the upstream field, target field and transform rule.
What to agree during setup
Choose the grain at which a result should be compared: by date, source or another dimension the records support. Agree whether an aggregation is a sum, distinct count, ratio of sums, last observed value or median. Write the numerator and denominator expressions in terms analysts can test against a real source. Map source types before introducing transformations. Effective dating should tell the team which rule applied to a production date, especially when a plant changes its measurement practice midmonth.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Select a resource for one organization and production window. Prepare a draft metric definition with an explicit unit, version and aggregation method. The reviewer inspects its numerator, denominator and mapping before approval. Attach the reviewed resource to a snapshot and inspect a resulting value. When the definition changes, retain the earlier version and confirm that the older result still points to the rule it used. This is the check that protects trend comparisons from quiet definition changes. If the source field is renamed upstream, the steward checks the mapping version and effective date before the next import. The reviewer can then explain why the current rule remains suitable or needs a new version.
What your team sees
- Metric definitions awaiting approval — Draft rules with version, grain and reviewer beside them.
- Approved metric definitions — Rules available to analysts with their aggregation method and unit.
Follow the work through
Use definition review before efficiency calculation. The integration notes help settle source-field ownership.
