What you can do

Put the observed loss beside coverage

A cargo survey belongs to a marine policy and insurer organization. The Insurance Coordinator records the shipment reference, surveyor, survey date and assessed loss in US dollars. Its status distinguishes Draft from Submitted and the subsequent review outcome. The revision identifies the version sent forward. A survey is evidence about damage; its assessed amount does not itself become an approved claim benefit.

For a damaged shipment, start with the policy that covered the cargo. Use the shipment reference to connect the survey to the operational case, then record when it was surveyed and by whom. Check that the organization is the one responsible for the policy. Submit the survey when the assessed loss and identifying details are ready for independent review. The Authorized Underwriter can then compare the survey with the policy and any claim evidence.

How the work is organized

  • Survey record. Shipment and survey details stay attached to the parent policy.
  • Submission. Draft work moves to Submitted for a reviewer to consider.
  • Decision. An independent review of a submitted survey records approval and the decision time.

What to agree during setup

Agree how shipment references are recorded and how surveyors identify their work. Set a standard for the assessment amount and the evidence to attach to the policy. Decide when a revised survey gets a new revision and who is allowed to submit it. Confirm who acts as the Authorized Underwriter for each organization and how a revised survey returns for review. The team should also agree how a survey relates to a claim: both reference the policy, while the claim owns its reported loss, amount and later insurer decision.

Check the handoff on an actual case

Enter a cargo survey for a policy with an active cargo line. Record the shipment reference and an assessed loss, then submit it. Confirm it appears in Submitted Cargo Surveys for the reviewer. Ask the underwriter to review it and inspect the decision time and final survey status. Compare the claim’s loss evidence and claimed amount separately; an approved survey should not silently approve a different claim amount. If the survey changes after submission, keep its earlier revision legible for the next review.

What your team sees

  • Submitted Cargo Surveys — Collect damage assessments awaiting independent review.
  • Open Claims — Compare the associated policy’s reported loss with claim progress.

Follow the work through
