Who it's for

Distributed network operations

A distributed network team needs to know which site, device and port a work order concerns. The asset directory holds the site and contact, while the work order carries the owner, due date and authorized quantity. A held port assignment adds the device, port number and VLAN for review.

How Network Inventory Management is set up for you

Site directory

Use active assets with stable codes so a location selected on a work order means the same place to field staff and supervisors.

Port review

Inspect held assignments against the current work order revision before the supervisor records a decision and reason.

Field evidence

Record actual activity under the parent work order, then compare posted quantity with authorized scope.

Exception queue

Use Operations Overview to put late jobs beside failed receipts and escalated decisions.

A distributed network team needs to know which site, device and port a work order concerns. The asset directory holds the site and contact, while the work order carries the owner, due date and authorized quantity. A held port assignment adds the device, port number and VLAN for review.

Start with a small set of active sites and the network items that the team uses there. Agree on a device naming convention and the meaning of the quantity on both work orders and port assignments. Give one clerk a representative job with a known site, port and VLAN. Have a supervisor inspect the current revision and decide it, then post evidence and run completion reconciliation.

The first rehearsal should include an incorrect quantity. A failed receipt should leave the work order unchanged and direct the owner back to its evidence. Repeat the same action key to confirm the prior result is returned. A correction should retain the earlier evidence, so an auditor can explain the whole sequence without reconstructing it from messages.
