Aerospace assembly quality
An assembly quality team needs to keep the inspection decision close to the characteristic evidence that informed it. The subject reference identifies the assembly under examination, while the inspection type distinguishes incoming, in-process, final and service work. A first article check can retain the part number, revision, characteristic and actual result against that inspection.
How Aerospace and Defense QMS is set up for you
Inspection lead
Quality Manager assigns the inspection and planned date, then follows planned and active cases in the open queue.
Characteristic recorder
Inspector enters requirements, observations, results and attachments as linked inspection checks.
Disposition reviewer
Quality Approver examines the checks in review and decides whether the inspected scope is accepted or rejected.
Correction owner
Quality Manager follows a rejected case into linked containment and corrective action.
Start with one assembly revision and a final inspection that the team can reproduce. Record a passing and a failing characteristic. Attach the evidence to the respective check and send the case to review only after every linked requirement and result is present. Reject the failed scope and follow the linked nonconformance. The team should be able to move back from the containment record to the original inspection without copying the observation into a separate tracker.
Then add a first article characteristic for the same part revision and inspect its requirement, actual result and disposition. Keep that check linked to the operational inspection. Choose the part number and revision convention before loading a larger batch, so two similarly named assemblies do not become indistinguishable. The [inspection process](/qms-for-aerospace-and-defense/processes/inspection-to-disposition) and [trace evidence module](/qms-for-aerospace-and-defense/modules/trace-evidence) give the team a common rehearsal.
Features to start with
Corrective actions
Keep root cause, approved action, owner and effectiveness review attached to a nonconformance.
Trace evidence
Keep first article characteristics and material certificate references close to quality decisions.
Inspection disposition
Review linked checks, accept inspected scope or raise a nonconformance for rejected work.
Roles on the team
- Quality Manager
- Owns quality setup, planning and assigned operational work.
- Inspector
- Captures assigned quality work and evidence.
