Explore a forecast scenario

Define a planning question, select a dated baseline and compare category outcomes under explicit assumptions.

Step by step

  1. Define the question Sales Manager

Sales Manager, Sales Director or VP Sales names the scenario and explains the planning question. Identify the forecast period and author so another leader can follow up on the result.

    • Author, period and planning purpose are recorded
    • Updates Scenarios
  2. Choose the baseline Sales Manager

Select the dated pipeline snapshot used by the scenario. Sales Operations checks that the intended baseline exists and represents the opportunity population being discussed.

    • Based on snapshot date identifies the comparison source
    • Updates Scenarios, Pipeline snapshots
  3. Enter the assumptions Sales Manager

The author records category multipliers, slip assumptions, amount haircuts, AI thresholds or manual additions. Use the agreed value conventions and explain the input in a note where its business meaning needs context.

    • Parameter values and category context are recorded
    • Updates Scenario inputs, Forecast categories
  4. Compute the comparison Sales Operations

Changes to scenario inputs trigger the calculation and update category outputs. Each output retains its baseline and projected amount with the computation time.

    • Existing category output is updated with projected amounts
    • Updates Scenario outputs, Scenario inputs
  5. Share the interpretation Sales Director

The author reviews the result and shares the planning question through the agreed procedure. Leadership compares it with the current call and sends any intended official forecast change through the rep and manager review path.

    • Leadership reviews assumptions against the current call
    • Updates Scenarios, Scenario outputs, Forecast rollups

Where it usually breaks

And how to keep it from happening.

  • Scenarios use different snapshot dates without making that difference clear in the discussion.
  • A percentage, multiplier or amount is entered with an inconsistent value convention.
  • The projected result is treated as an already approved change to the rep's submission.
