Distribution returns
A distributor needs to know which returned units are physically present, which are held for a request and which are ready for another movement. Stock requests connect the item and receiving location to a reviewed decision. Posted movements then show the actual quantity change, while reservations make competing claims visible.
How SCM with Returns Management is set up for you
Receiving dock
Inventory Coordinator opens a request for the returned item, names the dock and records the expected units and required date.
Quarantine area
Storage location eligibility notes and lot release state help the team distinguish held stock from stock ready for ordinary work.
Independent review
Inventory Reviewer records a reasoned decision against the current request revision before approved work moves onward.
Quantity trail
A posted movement and its parent request let Auditor follow the effect back to the reviewed return.
A distributor needs to know which returned units are physically present, which are held for a request and which are ready for another movement. Stock requests connect the item and receiving location to a reviewed decision. Posted movements then show the actual quantity change, while reservations make competing claims visible.
Choose one organization, a receiving dock, a warehouse location and a quarantine area. Load the returnable items with their base units and lot tracking rules. Run a request through evidence collection, review, reservation and movement posting. Compare the resulting available quantity in Operations Overview with the posted movement ledger and active reservations.
Include a case where the received quantity differs from the request. Change the request revision and have the reviewer decide that version. Include a second case with a quarantined lot so the team practices the release decision before counting it as ordinary eligible stock. Keep a clear rule for who may reverse a posted movement when the wrong location was used.
The first live operating cycle should be small enough for the coordinator and reviewer to examine every exception. The team can add more locations after the request, lot and correction trail are understandable. If customer refunds or carrier claims are part of the wider return, plan those as separate connected processes with their own owners.
