What you can do
Keep the work tied to its source
filing periods give declarations and notices a dated operating window. Tax Accountant reviews each declaration’s lines, tax accounts and debit and credit totals within that window. The Filing Close & Reconciliation screen brings unposted or unbalanced declarations and payment exceptions into a period review. It helps the team find work that needs attention before a period is closed.
A draft declaration can look complete while its debit and credit totals differ. Tax Accountant follows the entry to its lines and tax accounts before deciding what to correct. A posted status alone would not explain whether the figures balance; the underlying lines and the calculated balance result do.
How the work is organized
- Define the window. Admin sets period start and end dates and keeps the period status visible to the filing team.
- Review the entry. Tax Accountant checks the organization, period, source and each debit or credit line.
- Inspect exceptions. Tax Manager opens Filing Close & Reconciliation to see draft, unbalanced and payment cases together.
What to agree during setup
Agree how periods are named, who maintains their dates and when a period moves from Open to Closed or Locked. Match each declaration to the organization and filing period that owns it. Decide which tax accounts the accountant uses for common posting sources. The posting source is a classification on the entry; it is not evidence that a separate source system has transferred data.
Rehearse a correction to a draft entry. Tax Accountant should be able to find the line that causes a mismatch, adjust the source record and explain the revised totals. Tax Manager should inspect the same result on the close screen. Keep the responsible person and the correction in the declaration memo when the reason is not apparent from the lines.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Create a draft declaration for an open period with one debit line and a smaller credit line. Check the rolled-up debit and credit totals and the out-of-balance result. declarations Unposted should keep the entry in view, while Filing Close & Reconciliation should show the balance exception. Tax Accountant checks the account and amount on each line and corrects the mistaken line.
Next, attach the declaration to the wrong period as a deliberate test. The accountant must identify the date mismatch from the entry date and period boundaries before the period review proceeds. Have Tax Manager verify that the entry no longer appears as an exception after correction. The review concerns the saved entry and its lines; no automatic posting action is implied by this check.
What your team sees
- declarations Unposted — Draft entries with period, totals and balance result for accountant review.
- GL Entry Review — Declaration entries with source and tax account context for review.
Follow the work through
Read return and remittance for the complete handoff, and period close review for declaration and payment exceptions. Use implementation to rehearse the first operating cycle with your own entity and period.
