What you can do

Explain the tax position from its documents

The period review starts with the amounts recorded on customer invoices and vendor bills. GST Position & Tax Periods brings output tax, input tax credit and the net recorded tax into a period view. Staff Accountant opens the contributing documents to explain an unexpected movement. Controller decides whether the evidence and treatment support the amount being carried into the close.

A tax total needs a clear date basis and document population. A draft invoice can carry an amount before it is sent. A disputed vendor bill can carry input tax credit while its underlying charge remains unresolved. Agree how those cases enter the review so the team can compare periods without changing the meaning of the figures.

How the work is organized

  • Output tax review. Follow the recorded output tax on each customer invoice, with its issue date, organization and status. Check the source document when a total differs from the expected amount.
  • Input tax credit review. Use the purchase bill’s tax period, recorded credit amount and vendor evidence. Keep disputed charges visible to the person deciding their treatment.
  • Period calendar. Use the period’s start and end dates to frame the review. Open, Closed and Locked identify the accounting calendar state; retain the reason for a closing decision in the close notes.

What to agree during setup

Controller defines the review population with Staff Accountant. Agree the date boundary for customer invoices, the period assignment for purchase bills and the treatment of Draft and Void documents. Keep comparisons within the selected organization’s base currency. The organization and currency context must remain visible when presenting totals from separate books.

Use examples from the current accounting cycle to confirm the treatment of input tax credit and output tax. A selected tax code on a bill line helps explain coding; the recorded header amount still needs review against the source invoice. Document who corrects a value and who checks the changed period position before the team relies on it.

Check the handoff on an actual case

Consider an invoice with recorded output tax of 150 and a vendor bill with recorded input tax credit of 60. For an agreed population containing those documents, the net recorded tax is 90. Use the customer’s reviewed figures when rehearsing the same comparison. Staff Accountant drills into both documents and verifies their organization, dates and amounts.

Now move the bill to the next accounting period in the rehearsal. The team should explain why the selected period’s position changes and where the credit appears next. Controller reviews the period assignment and records the reason for the correction. Repeat with a disputed bill so the team understands how the agreed inclusion policy affects its review.

What your team sees

  • Tax period calendar — Open the review interval and read the close notes alongside its current status.
  • AR Invoice Register — Inspect issue dates and output tax on the customer documents behind the period review.
  • AP Bills Worklist — Trace recorded input tax credit to the bill and its assigned period.

Follow the work through

Review the tax period after checking the journal entries. Use the data model to agree the date and reference mappings before importing open work.
