What you can do
Keep the next commercial step visible
An opportunity records the account, owner and expected close date alongside its expected USD value. The Account Manager maintains the probability and next step as the conversation develops. New, Qualified, Proposal and Negotiation describe open commercial work; Won and Lost record the closing outcome.
Pipeline Command presents the lifecycle pipeline with open value by stage and overdue follow-up work. Use that view of the business to identify which conversations need attention, then open the opportunity and its activities to understand the next action. Expected value describes the deal being pursued, while the outcome still needs to be recorded explicitly.
How the work is organized
- Establish the opportunity. Select the account and primary contact, assign the owner and record the expected close date. Give the subject enough detail that another team member can recognize the customer request.
- Record commercial progression. Use qualification and proposal activity to explain the move through the pipeline. Maintain the next step when negotiation or a customer response changes what the Account Manager needs to do.
- Close with an explained outcome. Record Won or Lost through the closing action with the supplied reason. Inspect the resulting operation receipt and retain the customer evidence that explains the outcome.
What to agree during setup
Agree what the team considers qualified and when an opportunity should move to Proposal or Negotiation. Keep the distinction between a status update and an independent approval clear: qualification records sales progression, while retention review has its own human decision later in the customer cycle.
Define how expected value and probability are maintained. Neither should be treated as cash received or as an automatic calculation from product lines. Decide how the Account Manager records a lost reason and how the team checks the evidence behind a won outcome. Review the expected close date when the next step changes.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Prepare an opportunity for an existing online business account considering an additional product. The Account Manager identifies the contact, expected value and next step, then qualifies the opportunity. Inspect the logged qualification activity and the operation result before preparing its proposal lines.
Continue to proposal and negotiation, then rehearse both a won outcome and a separate lost case. The team should be able to explain the result from the recorded reason and retained customer evidence. Inspect Pipeline Command and the opportunity record together so the closed case is understood in its proper stage. A successful closing operation should not be described as a completed payment or fulfilled order.
