What you can do
Check consent and professional authority around care work
The coordinator records patient consent for a stated purpose and version, with signed and expiry dates and an attached document. Governance staff maintain a clinician privilege with its type, licensing details, verification evidence and effective dates. The reviewer can inspect these records before treating a case as ready for review.
How the work is organized
- Patient consent. Keep purpose, version, document and dates with the patient.
- Professional authority. Keep privilege type, licensing details and evidence with the clinician.
- Separate decisions. A signed consent and a verified privilege have different owners and status histories.
A consent belongs to a patient and a stated purpose; a privilege belongs to a clinician. The coordinator maintains the first record, while the Clinical Governance Administrator maintains the second. The Clinical Reviewer can inspect both without changing either. An expiring document or suspended privilege should remain visible as its own status. Staff should not infer that a consent record grants a clinician a verified privilege or that a verified privilege replaces patient consent.
What to agree during setup
Agree consent purposes, document versions and the person who reviews expiring records. Establish how governance staff verify a clinician privilege and what evidence they retain. Keep the effective periods accurate, especially when a clinician changes duties.
Rehearse a pending consent whose document and version need checking, alongside a pending clinician privilege. Agree who checks the signed date and expiry and who examines licensing evidence. Include a withdrawn consent and an expired privilege so each owner practices identifying the current status. Keep the decisions separate even if the same consultation needs both records reviewed.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Use a patient whose consent is pending and a clinician whose privilege is pending verification. Review the consent purpose, document and expiry date. Ask governance staff to check licensing evidence and dates before marking the privilege verified. Reopen the case and confirm the two records still show separate decisions and responsible people.
Have the Clinical Coordinator open Consent Review and identify the patient, purpose and document. The Clinical Governance Administrator then checks Privileges Pending Verification for the named clinician. Ask the Clinical Reviewer to inspect both records without editing them. If either link or date is wrong, send the record back to its owner before relying on it for the visit.
