What you can do
Turn a defined recipe into accountable output
A recipe records component quantities against an explicit output basis. The routing sets the operation sequence. Each work order carries the selected recipe, output product, standard cost, warehouse and planned quantity. This supports a distributor that prepares a defined kit or repacked saleable item before fulfilling a dealer order.
Warehouse Manager reviews the frozen recipe and routing before release. Warehouse Operator records actual material issues and production entries. Completed output has its own confirmation, quantity, location and value. An operation marked complete is not itself another finished unit; the completion record is the point where output is recognized.
How the work is organized
- Instruction version. The active recipe and routing define the planned component and operation basis.
- Physical execution. Material reservations, issues and production entries show what was consumed or returned.
- Output and cost. Completion relieves work in progress and records standard output value and variance.
A work order may serve a particular accepted sales line or general replenishment. Both paths need an eligible output product and a positive planned quantity. Material work and labor remain tied to the order so finance can explain the cost accumulated before completion.
What to agree during setup
Agree which products are stock, kit or repacked output, and which components belong to the recipe. Set base-unit conversions, allowed planned scrap and operation instructions. Decide who maintains technical versions and who independently approves the effective recipe and cost standard. Define the warehouse and output location used for the first controlled run.
Release requires a reviewed current work order, active recipe, routing and standard. Close is a separate decision. Warehouse Manager checks that materials, entries, completed output and remaining work are accounted for. Finance Manager reviews an eligible residual variance rather than letting a status change make it disappear.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Prepare a kit from two stocked products for a dealer order. Reserve the components, release the work order and record actual issue. If one component is damaged before use, record its return or scrap source rather than leaving it as consumed. Enter the good and scrap quantities for the operation, then confirm only the actual finished output into the selected location.
Compare accumulated material, labor and overhead with the standard value of that output. The difference should remain visible for review. When output is partially completed, the remaining work and cost should stay with the open order. Attempt to close it with unexplained residual cost and check that the close decision requires resolution or independent variance authority.
What your team sees
- Production schedule — Released and active work with output product and planned dates.
- Warehouse availability — Components and completed output in their actual custody states.
- Count review queue — Physical differences that affect the production stock basis.
Follow the work through
What it keeps track of
Data model- Bill of materials
- Effective distribution assembly/repacking recipes with explicit output basis.
- BOM components
- Component quantities per explicit output basis, preserving dimensions and allowed loss.
- Routings
- Versioned assembly/repacking instructions, distinct from delivery routes.
- Routing operations
- Ordered work instructions and declared labour/overhead bases.
- Work orders
- Released bounded assembly/kitting/repacking, without plant APS or payroll scope.
- Work order components
- Frozen required input and actual traced issue/return scope.
- Work order operations
- Frozen instructions and assigned actual work.
- Production log
- Actual operation throughput, scrap and labour evidence; intermediate counts do not sum to output.
- Production completions
- Accepted terminal output and WIP cost allocation, once per actual completed scope.
- Work order cost entries
- Immutable WIP debit/credit sources and bounded actual-cost allocation.
- Cost standards
- Entity/product standard per base unit with immutable effective versions.
Who uses it
Permissions- Warehouse Manager
- Releases and closes work.
- Warehouse Operator
- Records actual material and operation work.
- Finance Manager
- Reviews standards and residual value.
- Accountant
- Reconciles work in progress to posted journals.
