What you can do
Keep the finding with the material it affects
Each quality inspection records the product, inspected quantities, inspection date and disposition against a receipt or work-order operation reference. The inspection result retains measured values or Pass and Fail outcomes for defined characteristics. When evidence requires investigation, the nonconformance report links the finding to the lot, supplier or production record where available. The quality hold then carries the actual restriction and its disposition. Quality Inspector can review the evidence and the affected work without treating a completed production operation as automatic quality release.
How the work is organized
- Plan and measure. The inspection plan defines the inspection type, version and sampling rule. Each inspection characteristic sets the method and limits for each planned check. The instrument record carries calibration dates and status; the inspection rehearsal must reject an overdue instrument before a new result is accepted.
- Contain and decide. The quality hold distinguishes a Lot, goods receipt or work order operation hold and retains the person placing the hold and its date. On hold remains an operational restriction until Quality Inspector records the supported disposition and release attribution. Scrapped and Returned outcomes must remain distinguishable from Released.
- Close the cause. The corrective action retains owner, due date, completed date, verified date and verified by against nonconformance report. Open, in progress, Completed, Verified and Closed separate doing the corrective work from independently verifying its result. Keep the verifier distinct from the owner in the configured route.
What to agree during setup
Quality Inspector defines the incoming and final evidence required for the pilot product and which operation needs an in-process check. Agree how a failing characteristic opens a finding and what each disposition permits next. Rework needs its own reviewed handoff before material can return to use. Confirm the instrument expiry boundary and the access used for verification. Certificates can carry a document attachment with Valid, Expired or Rejected status; agree who reviews the attachment and its expiry before it is used as supporting evidence.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Record a failing inspection on a supplier lot and place a linked quality hold. Attempt material issue, completion and shipment while the hold remains on hold. The configured controls must refuse each affected operation. Quality Inspector investigates nonconformance reports, records the root cause method and root cause where required, then decides whether the material is accepted, reworked, rejected or returned under the supported dispositions.
For a corrective action, let its owner complete the work and attempt to verify it using the same identity. The route must refuse self-verification. A different permitted Quality Inspector records the verifier and verification date after reviewing the result. Rehearse a separate inspection with an overdue instrument and ensure it cannot produce accepted new evidence. Existing historical results remain available for investigation if the instrument later changes status; correcting current instrument data must not rewrite the original selected instrument on inspection results.
What your team sees
- Held material — Follow unresolved restrictions with their lot, receipt or production context.
- Open corrective actions — Distinguish work in progress from completed actions awaiting verification.
- Incoming inspection queue — Review received material that needs an inspection disposition.
Follow the work through
Follow quality hold and corrective action, then review batch evidence. Rehearse permissions with separate action-owner and verifier accounts.
What it keeps track of
Data model- Inspection plans
- What to check for an item at a point, incoming, in-process at an operation or final, with the sampling rule; versioned.
- Inspection characteristics
- One characteristic on a plan: what is measured, how, with which instrument, and the limits.
- Quality inspections
- Quality inspections on incoming material, in-process, and final release.
- Inspection results
- The measured value or pass and fail per characteristic on one inspection.
- Instruments
- Gauges and instruments with calibration intervals; an overdue instrument cannot be selected on an inspection.
- Certificates
- Certificates of conformance, material test reports and calibration certificates, attached to a supplier lot or an instrument.
- Quality holds
- A hold on a lot, a receipt or a work-order operation: nothing on hold can be issued, shipped or completed until the disposition lifts it.
- Non conformance reports
- A failed inspection, a customer complaint or a floor observation, pointing at the lot, supplier, machine and operator, with its root cause.
- Corrective actions
- The action that closes a non-conformance: an owner, a due date, and a verification by someone else before it closes.
- Goods receipts
- Physical receipt of raw materials against a purchase order.
Who uses it
Permissions- Quality Inspector
- , Shop Floor Supervisor, Buyer, Operator.
- Quality Inspector
- Owns inspection and disposition work.
- Shop Floor Supervisor
- Coordinates affected operations; Buyer handles supplier purchasing consequences.
- Operator
- Uses the permitted movement route after the hold decision is resolved.
