Assembly and kitting
Assembly and kitting connects a product's component quantities, ordered operations and standard cost to actual work. A distributor may combine stocked items into a kit or repack an item before delivery. The work order controls how much output is intended and which material and cost sources may be consumed.

What you can do
How the work is organized
- Instructions. A bill of materials identifies component requirements for the output product. A routing provides ordered operations and declared labor or overhead basis.
- Execution. Warehouse Manager releases a reviewed work order. Warehouse Operator records material issues and actual operation time, good quantity and scrap.
- Completion. Accepted terminal output becomes stock once, with actual work-in-progress cost allocated to the completed quantity and variance made visible.
A draft recipe or changed standard should not silently alter a released order. Its frozen basis allows the team to compare planned inputs with what was actually issued and returned. Intermediate operation quantities are progress evidence; they are not additional finished units.
What to agree during setup
Decide which products are stocked finished items and which are kits or repacked outputs. Review product units, component quantities, routing order and the standard cost version. Assign a warehouse location for material issue and accepted output. Name the Warehouse Manager responsible for release and the Finance Manager for cost and variance decisions.
Agree how staff record operation starts and ends and how scrap is classified. Record actual labor hours and overhead basis only when the work genuinely uses them. The financial posting profile must point material, work in progress, output and variance to the appropriate entity accounts.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Create a work order to assemble a dealer’s kit from stocked components. Verify the component reservation uses the correct entity and available position. Warehouse Manager reviews the frozen bill, routing, output product and positive planned quantity before release. Warehouse Operator issues only bounded component quantities, records an operation entry and notes any scrap.
Complete part of the output. The completion should take an eligible terminal entry and allocate only the actual work-in-progress scope behind that accepted quantity. Confirm the output enters the intended location, its standard value is recorded and any variance stays visible. Close only after remaining material, cost and output scope have been reconciled. If a recorded entry needs correction, retain the original and a linked correction rather than replacing the historical event.
What your team sees
- Production schedule — Released and active work orders by output, planned window and manager.
- Warehouse availability — Inputs available for reservation and completed output after posting.
- Period close work — Reconciliation tasks that include unresolved production balances.
Follow the work through
Follow assembly to completion and financial close.
What it keeps track of
Data model- Bill of materials
- BOM header — the recipe for producing a given product.
- BOM components
- Each raw or sub-assembly consumed to build the parent product.
- Routings
- Routing header — the sequence of operations required to build a product.
- Routing operations
- Ordered work instructions and declared labour/overhead bases.
- Work orders
- Released bounded assembly/kitting/repacking, without plant APS or payroll scope.
- Work order components
- Exploded BOM demand for a work order — what raw material is needed and from where.
- Work order operations
- Frozen instructions and assigned actual work.
- Production log
- Shop-floor time and quantity transactions against a work-order operation.
- Production completions
- Accepted terminal output and WIP cost allocation, once per actual completed scope.
- Work order cost entries
- Immutable WIP debit/credit sources and bounded actual-cost allocation.
- Cost standards
- The standard cost of an item by element — material, labour, overhead and outside processing — pending or current, activated on a date.
Who uses it
Permissions- Warehouse Manager
- Releases work and confirms eligible output.
