What you can do
Make the hold understandable to the floor
A quality hold needs an identifiable subject and a clear next decision. Quality Inspector records the affected lot, receipt or work-order operation and the associated non-conformance. Inspection results retain the characteristic checked, its result and the person recording it. The production team can then explain why material is waiting and which evidence the inspector needs before deciding its disposition.
How the work is organized
- Inspection preparation. Maintain the plan, sampling rule and characteristics for the product or operation. Record measurement limits where applicable and select the instrument used for the check.
- Containment and decision. Keep held material visible with its source and disposition. Review whether the appropriate outcome is acceptance, rework, rejection or return, and coordinate that decision with the affected floor or receiving team.
- Corrective work. Record the action owner and due date against the non-conformance. Separate completed work from verified work so the reviewer can confirm that the action addressed the original problem.
What to agree during setup
Choose a representative incoming or final inspection with the person who performs it. Agree the characteristic wording, measurement method and accepted limits. Check the selected instrument’s calibration status and due date, and decide how the team handles an overdue instrument before recording results.
Define the handoff between Quality Inspector and Industry Reviewer. The inspector owns manufacturing inspection and hold evidence; the reviewer examines specialty dye evidence. Agree the shade and colorfastness acceptance criteria and explain when a dye review requires the production team to keep material waiting. Use the same physical lot identity throughout the discussion.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Rehearse incoming yarn that fails a required check. Quality Inspector records the result and the affected receipt, then links the non-conformance to the appropriate product and lot. Put the material on hold and ask Operator to identify where it is being held. Buyer should be able to find the purchase that brought the material into the mill.
Record a corrective action with a responsible employee and a due date. When the action is marked Completed, have the verifier inspect the supporting result before progressing to Verified. The quality discussion should explain whether the original material can be accepted, needs rework or must be returned.
Repeat the review with a dye job whose shade is acceptable but whose colorfastness evidence requires further investigation. Industry Reviewer examines that evidence before specialty release. Keep the associated manufacturing hold and the dye decision clear to Shop Floor Supervisor so the next operation does not start on an assumption.
At the end of the rehearsal, check the released date and the person responsible for the hold decision. Ask the next shift to locate the evidence using the same lot or work order. A release handoff is useful when the incoming team can explain both the decision and the material it applies to.
What your team sees
- Active Quality Holds — Held lots, receipts and operations with their disposition and responsible employees.
- Incoming QC Queue — Received material waiting for inspection or acceptance.
- Dye Lot Review Board — Specialty shade and colorfastness evidence for Industry Reviewer’s decision.
Follow the work through
Use dye evidence to release for specialty review and production to finished stock for accepted output.
