What you can do
Keep the factor's basis available for review
Sustainability Analyst maintains the factor used to express carbon per kilowatt-hour of consumed energy. Each factor records its energy type, region and effective start, with a source citation and a link to the relevant operating event. These details let Energy Manager understand the basis behind an emissions discussion and ask for clarification where the source or applicability is unclear.
The cited source matters as much as the factor value. A plausible value still needs an identifiable origin and an effective date appropriate to the review. When the team assesses an outage or curtailment period, it should be able to find the linked event and explain why the chosen factor belongs with that operating context.
How the work is organized
- Factor preparation. Sustainability Analyst selects the operating event and records the energy type, region and effective date. The source citation identifies where the factor came from and supports later review.
- Basis validation. Validation checks the event attribution, effective date and nonnegative factor basis. Rejected records carry notes that direct the analyst to the item requiring correction.
- Applicability review. Sustainability Analyst and Energy Manager examine the factor alongside the event and the energy period under discussion. They agree the consumption scope before using the factor in an emissions calculation.
What to agree during setup
Agree which source publications the team uses and how citations should be written so another reviewer can locate them. Decide who maintains the regional description and how energy types correspond to the meters being assessed. A shared naming convention makes it easier to recognize a factor that belongs to a different energy source.
For emissions analysis, agree how reviewed consumption is matched to a factor and how the calculation handles its effective date. Record that method as part of reporting setup. Review the event and consumption period together before presenting a result, especially when the factor becomes effective during a period being analyzed. Keep the selected source available when the team revisits that calculation.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Choose a resolved curtailment event at a factory site. Sustainability Analyst creates a factor entry linked to the event and supplies the regional basis, effective start and source citation. Energy Manager opens the operating event to check the actual interval and the context for the review. Both people should be able to identify the energy period to which the factor will be applied.
Repeat the exercise with a negative factor value or an absent source citation. Confirm that validation rejects the entry and provides a reason the analyst can act on. After correction, review the factor again without changing the underlying event period. Finally, select a factor whose effective start falls after the period under discussion and explain why it cannot supply the basis for that earlier calculation.
What your team sees
- Factor Review — Examine valid factor entries with their cited source and linked operating event.
- Factor Exceptions — Find rejected factors and the correction each requires.
- Event Recovery — Review acknowledged events and their actual operating intervals.
