What you can do
Keep a review inside its cycle
Performance Cycles define a named annual, mid-year, probation or off-cycle window, with start and end dates and review milestones. A Performance Review ties the subject and reviewer to that cycle and distinguishes self, manager, peer, upward or skip-level input. Its status shows whether work has started, been submitted, calibrated, released or acknowledged. The overall rating and narrative stay with the particular review.
Goals add an employee-owned item to the same cycle. They carry a title, category, weight, due date, progress, status and final rating. HR Business Partner can examine review progress by cycle without treating a draft goal as a completed result. Employee can enter goals through the configured self-service role and read their performance information.
How the work is organized
- Cycle. Performance Cycles establish the dates and phases in which reviews take place.
- Review and goal. Performance Reviews retain the subject, reviewer, narrative and decision state; Goals retain planned outcomes and progress.
- Learning. Courses, Course Enrollments and Training Records connect a learning assignment to a completed and dated record.
The course catalog names a category, delivery mode, duration and whether the course is mandatory. An enrollment identifies the employee, course, assignment reason, due date, completion date, score and status. Training Records then capture the completed course or competency, provider, completion date, expiry and certificate location.
What to agree during setup
Choose the first performance cycle and name its reviewer population. Decide when a review can move from submission into calibration, when it is released to the employee, and how acknowledgement is recorded. For learning, confirm which courses apply by role, how an external LMS supplies completion information, and who checks certificates before marking a training record valid. Set the access rule for narratives and ratings before inviting reviewers.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Open a probation cycle for a recent hire. Create a goal with a due date and a reviewer-led performance review. Ask the reviewer to record the narrative and rating, then inspect the status change at submission, calibration and release. Assign a mandatory course to the same employee. When the course is complete, check that the enrollment carries its completion date and that the training record has the intended expiry and certificate reference. An expired record should stay visible to L&D Admin for follow-up.
