What you can do
Stock movements in practice
Stock value moves with stock. A position identifies the owned product, warehouse, location, lot and custody state. Stock events group signed movement legs, while layers retain the remaining source quantity and value. A transfer changes custody and location without creating another purchase or another owner.
How the work is organized
- Identity. Select the exact position and layer that supply the quantity.
- Event. Keep the source action and its operation key with the movement.
- Transit. Reconcile dispatched quantity and value to the part received at the destination.
What to agree during setup
Warehouse Manager should agree the source and destination warehouses, who releases a transfer and what evidence confirms actual dispatch and receipt. Accountant should agree the posting account for owned transit. Availability rules must consider reservations and held custody before a release. The transfer needs a clear remainder when only part of the dispatch arrives.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Start with an open receipt layer and reserve part of its available quantity. Release a same-entity transfer for a bounded portion, then record dispatch. The source position falls and a transit position carries the owned value. Receive only part at the destination and check that the residual stays in transit. Compare all signed movement legs: quantity and value must reconcile by product and entity.
What your team sees
- Held and transit stock board — Review stock that remains owned while it cannot be picked as ordinary available stock.
- Transfers in progress — Follow the transfer status and destination receipt.
A movement review should start with the event, then inspect every signed leg. For a transfer, one leg removes quantity and value from the source while another carries it in owned transit. A later actual receipt moves the supported part into the destination. The open layer still explains origin and remaining value after these changes. This is especially useful when a shipment or work order reserves stock during the same period: the team can distinguish a claim from physical custody and from final consumption. Accountant can use the operation key to trace a retry to the original event.
When the destination receives less than dispatched, Warehouse Manager should leave the difference in transit until the physical discrepancy is resolved. Warehouse Operator records each supported receipt against the transfer line. Accountant compares the line’s dispatched and received quantities with its transit value and the signed movement legs. If the team later corrects a movement, use a new linked event so the original dispatch and the reason for the correction remain visible at close.
Follow the work through
Follow the related process and check the data model when mapping your source records. During rehearsal, compare the source document, the decision and the resulting value effect. Keep the accountable person visible at each handoff.
What it keeps track of
Data model- Inventory positions
- Current owned stock by complete identity and custody state; provenance is not a second balance.
- Stock layers
- Remaining quantity/carrying value with receipt/output/return lineage.
- Stock events
- One immutable group of stock movements and the associated journal effect.
- Stock movements
- Signed position/layer legs; transfers balance quantity and value by SKU.
- Stock reservations
- Exclusive bounded demand claims through picking and owned transit.
- Stock transfers
- Same-entity transfer with actual dispatch/partial receipt and retained owned transit.
- Stock transfer lines
- Partial transfer quantities retain equal in-transit ownership and cost.
Who uses it
Permissions- Warehouse Manager
- Approves and follows transfers.
- Warehouse Operator
- Records actual movement facts.
