What you can do
Make the line the unit of work
A health and beauty order can mix products with different batch requirements. Order Coordinator selects a product for each line, enters ordered units and the net unit price, and records the batch code when it applies. A product carries its SKU, category, unit of measure, batch tracking setting, substitution setting, shelf life and list unit price. The order line carries the price used for this order.
Consider a retailer ordering a skin treatment and a wellness item. The skin treatment may be batch tracked while the wellness item is not. The coordinator can record both lines without treating the whole order as one undifferentiated quantity. The net order amount is computed from the lines when the draft is confirmed for review.
How the work is organized
- Catalog definition. Products belong to an organization and identify the item by SKU, name, unit and price.
- Commercial line. Order lines hold the ordered quantity, net unit price, substitution permission and line status.
- Batch context. A line can retain a batch code for allocation, shipment questions or return review.
What to agree during setup
Decide who owns the SKU list and how channel product codes map to it. Confirm the unit used for ordered quantities and whether a price comes from the product list or the submitted order. Agree when an operator may mark substitution allowed; the product’s substitutable setting and the order line’s permission both deserve review before any substitution is discussed.
Set a consistent batch code practice for products that require it. Shelf life in the product record supports an operating decision, while an expired batch exception records the case that needs attention. A warehouse or batch inventory source can be connected during implementation; the order line remains the visible commercial demand.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Create an order with two products, different quantities and net unit prices. Confirm the draft and compare the order amount with the line totals. Then leave one line open and allocate the other. The line statuses should explain which product has moved forward. A second allocation request for the same eligible line should not produce another allocated event for it.
Raise an expired batch exception for the line carrying a batch code. Support Specialist can show the exact order and product while Order Reviewer considers the recorded exception. Keep the exception separate from the commercial line so its resolution remains readable after the order moves forward.
