What you can do
Explain the economics behind an engagement
The Engagement Margin Desk presents contract value alongside delivered and billed amounts, realization, projected margin and over-budget signals for each engagement. A manager can open the engagement record from the desk to inspect the underlying position. The engagement stores delivered amount and hours, approved and invoiced service amount, delivered cost, milestone value, logged hours and expense total. Calculated fields show gross margin, contract consumption, hours burn and remaining amount to bill.
A Partner uses these signals to ask a specific question: is the engagement producing the expected value for the hours and cost already delivered? An Engagement Manager answers by checking service lines, time entries and expenses tied to the engagement. Finance Manager checks invoice and milestone payment records before interpreting a billing gap as a collection gap.
How the work is organized
- Engagement position. Compare contract value, delivery amounts, cost, invoiced service amount and hours on one engagement.
- Underlying work. Trace consultant hours and service lines back to people, dates and rates.
- Decision trail. Read approval decisions and operation receipts when a billed or approved amount needs explanation.
What to agree during setup
Choose a regular margin review cadence and identify the Partner and Engagement Manager for each client assignment. Agree how the firm defines billable work and what to do when a service line remains Submitted. Set a convention for examining over-budget signals: start with budget hours and logged hours, then review delivered value and cost, rather than changing the baseline without discussion. Keep Finance Manager in the review when invoiced amounts or collections need interpretation.
Check the handoff on an actual case
A client engagement is nearing its budget hours but has substantial contract value left to bill. The Partner opens the Engagement Margin Desk and drills into the engagement. The Engagement Manager checks logged hours against budget, reviews the submitted and approved service lines, and identifies submitted lines needing correction. Finance Manager checks invoiced service amount, approved milestones and milestone payments. The team can then distinguish delivery pressure from a billing delay and assign a named owner to each follow-up.
If an invoice operation failed, operation receipts shows the failed result; the associated milestone remains Approved for correction. If a service approval failed, the line stays Submitted. Those records help the reviewers avoid treating an attempted operation as completed financial work.
