What you can do

Put the reading in the right building context

Facilities Manager maintains the site name, location and timezone for each managed building or facility. Active, Maintenance and Closed describe the site’s operating state. Energy Analyst registers meters against the intended site, keeping the meter number, energy type and unit visible before readings are captured or compared.

The meter’s reading mode determines how its source values should be interpreted. A Cumulative register describes an accumulating reading, while Interval identifies a different input basis. Agree that distinction before the first import so a reviewer does not mistake a register value for consumption during a particular period.

How the work is organized

  • Site identity. Facilities Manager records the building context used by meters, operating events and maintenance tasks. A consistent site name and location help staff identify where an observation or response belongs.
  • Meter identity. Energy Analyst records the meter number and energy type with its site. The record becomes the reference for point readings and derived energy intervals, keeping the evidence attached to the intended source.
  • Unit and mode. The meter unit and reading mode provide the basis for interpreting incoming data. Energy Reviewer uses that context when examining an interval’s quantity and dates before validation.

What to agree during setup

Choose how the team distinguishes meters that have similar labels or are replaced during service. Confirm the site link against the physical installation and any external source identifier. Agree who may correct a meter’s descriptive details and how earlier readings will retain their original source context.

Review the site timezone with the people supplying readings and event times. Define the accepted input-date practice before comparing information from different facilities. Also confirm how Active, Maintenance and Closed are used in the portfolio so the operating review can distinguish a facility’s state from the state of an individual event or task.

Check the handoff on an actual case

Use a commercial building with an electricity meter serving the main plant area. Facilities Manager confirms the site name and timezone. Energy Analyst registers the meter with its number, energy type, unit and Cumulative reading mode, then captures a source reading against that record.

Ask Energy Reviewer to identify the site and meter from the reading before examining any derived consumption. The reviewer should be able to explain why the input is a cumulative register and which unit applies. Prepare another meter with a similar label at a different site and confirm that the source selection remains unambiguous.

Then rehearse a meter replacement or corrected identifier through the agreed maintenance practice. Check that the earlier readings remain attributable to their intended source rather than being silently reinterpreted. A clear identity handoff makes later interval validation and event investigation easier for someone who was not present when the original record was entered.

What your team sees

  • Site Portfolio — Managed facilities with their location, timezone and operating state.
  • Meter Directory — Meter identity, energy type, unit and reading mode by site.
  • Meter Reading Register — Source readings attached to the selected meter and date.

Follow the work through

Use Meter reading to validated interval, then Tariff period review when examining the site’s rate context.
