What you can do
Show what happened to each task
A queue can contain several ordered tasks. The Queue Operator works a selected task, records its outcome and keeps its source reference when one came from the originating system. The completion or reassignment workflow records numbered operation steps, including an external receipt identity for the effect it attempted. It updates the queue result fields and raises a receipt follow-up where the evidence needs attention.
An accepted task outcome is different from a successful operation run. The run reaches Succeeded only when every required effect is verified. If an external action fails or its result is unknown, the operator and analyst need the step status, receipt and failure reason before retrying or deciding what to correct. This distinction keeps an optimistic screen update from standing in for confirmed work.
How the work is organized
The Queue Operator works the task; Operations Analyst checks the execution trace.
- Selected task. Work under the correct queue and retain its sequence and description.
- Outcome. Record whether the task remains pending, was accepted or was rejected.
- Verified effect. Compare the step and external receipt with the resulting queue fields before closing the run.
What to agree during setup
Agree which task outcomes mean the business work was accepted or rejected, and who may reassign a selected task. Identify the external source that returns a receipt and decide how its identity is retained. Define what the team does when an attempt reports Failed or Unknown. A second attempt should be traceable to the same operation key and source queue, so the analyst can distinguish a retry from a different piece of work.
Rehearse a task that succeeds, one whose external receipt arrives late and one that fails. The team should know where to see each attempt, what evidence is needed to mark the run successful, and who owns follow-up after a receipt discrepancy.
Check the handoff on an actual case
An operator opens Pending queue tasks for an assigned queue and works its first task. The external provider returns a receipt. The operation step records that receipt, the task outcome moves from Pending to Accepted and the analyst checks the required effects. Once verified, the run reaches Succeeded and the queue reflects the result. If the receipt is missing, the task outcome alone does not settle the operation. The failure or unknown step stays visible, and a follow-up action names the person who must investigate.
The Queue Manager can then see the queue in progress and inspect which tasks remain. A task rejected for a documented reason is still a result to retain, not a task that should disappear from the queue history.
What your team sees
- Pending queue tasks — Tasks awaiting a recorded outcome under their parent queues.
- Unfinished operation steps — Pending, running or unknown execution details and receipt identifiers.
- Failed execution attempts — Attempts with a reason that the analyst can investigate.
Follow the work through
Task completion and receipts follows one task through its verified result. Operation correction covers a later documented change.
What it keeps track of
Data model- Queue tasks
- Individual tasks that make up a work queue
- Work queues
- Operational work queues with priority, SLA and status
- Operation runs
- Workflow-maintained durable operation runs
- Operation steps
- Numbered steps inside an operation run
- Execution attempts
- Attempts made to execute a queue operation
- Follow up actions
- Remediation actions raised against a work queue
- State history
- Immutable status transition history for work queues
Who uses it
Permissions- Queue Operator
- , Operations Analyst, Queue Manager, Follow-up Owner.
- The operator works the selected task; the analyst verifies effects; the manager watches remaining work; the follow-up owner resolves a receipt issue.
