What you can do
Keep the sharpening decision attached to the tool
A sharpening job identifies the asset, requested date and completion date alongside material removed and remaining allowance. Those measurements help Maintenance Reviewer decide whether the result meets the agreed release criteria. Technician records what happened to the tool so the decision can be reviewed in context.
The sharpening path moves from Queued through work in progress and Inspected to Released. Rejected records a different outcome. Completing the physical grinding operation does not settle the release decision; the reviewer must still examine the eligible evidence and the remaining allowance before authorizing the outcome.
How the work is organized
- Prepare the job. Technician confirms the asset and requested work before beginning. Use the same tool identity as the maintenance request, and agree the measurement units and source evidence that will accompany the submission.
- Capture the result. Record material removed, remaining allowance and actual dates as work progresses. The sharpening workflow validates the submission and enforces its permitted progression, retaining a separate route for rejection.
- Decide release. Maintenance Reviewer assesses the inspected result against the shop’s agreed criteria. Release follows that decision; a rejected result stays visible for Maintenance Manager to resolve before the tool returns to its intended use.
What to agree during setup
Agree the unit used for removal and allowance and where the permissible limits are maintained. Establish who supplies the measurements, what evidence the reviewer needs and how the team handles a value that cannot be reconciled. The same numeric value can mean different things when operators use different units or different measurement points.
Define when a job is ready to be marked Inspected and how the reviewer identifies the exact result being approved. Clarify the action after rejection: Maintenance Manager may need to arrange further investigation or decide the tool’s service position. Keep those decisions connected to the asset and the maintenance work instead of treating any completed sharpening entry as permission to use the tool.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Use TD-17 with a sharpening job waiting in the queue. Technician confirms the tool, starts the job and records the measured material removed and remaining allowance in the agreed unit. After inspection, Maintenance Reviewer checks the evidence and decides whether the result qualifies for Released.
Repeat with a result that fails the agreed allowance criterion. It should reach the rejection handling rather than being released because a completion date exists. Ask Technician to attempt release without the reviewer’s eligible action and verify that the decision remains controlled. Finally, open the maintenance completion review and confirm the team can distinguish the released case from the rejected case before closing work.
