What you can do
A second pair of eyes on every credit decision
Credit decisions are made by someone other than the officer who prepared the case. A review decision records the outcome (Approve, Reject or Return), the reason, the approver, the time and the version it applies to. Before any decision is written, the approver’s organization and scope are checked against the application.
An approved application records its approval date and decision reason. A rejected one is Declined. A returned one goes back to Draft for more work. The same queue handles credit instruments, which are approved only once the evidence is verified and the issuing bank has acknowledged them, and servicing changes such as reschedules and write-offs.
How the work is organized
- Exact version. The decision applies to the version under review. A change afterwards needs a new decision.
- Reasons kept. Every decision carries its reason, which is shown to the officer and kept for audit.
- One queue for three decisions. Applications, credit instruments and servicing changes all pass through the approver.
What to agree during setup
Name the approvers and their limits by product and amount. Agree what the approver checks: borrower eligibility, evidence validity, terms and exposure. Decide which servicing changes need approval and at what level. Confirm no approver decides an application they prepared.
Check the handoff on an actual case
The importer’s $750,000 application is under review. The Credit Approver reads the bureau report, the sales contract and the borrower’s eligibility note, which caps unsecured exposure at $500,000. She returns the application with the reason that cash collateral is needed above the cap.
The officer records a cash margin agreement as new evidence and resubmits. The approver approves the new version with the reason “Within limit with 35 percent cash margin.” The approval date is recorded, and the earlier return stays in the decision log.
