Commission lines
Brokerage is where a commodity broker’s spreadsheets usually fail. Each client pays different terms, some as a percentage, some per metric ton, some as a flat fee, some with a minimum, and the terms change when a client renegotiates. The calculation has to pick the right card for each side of each deal, apply it and leave a line the accounts team and the client can both check. Commission lines do that for every deal and keep the working on the line.

What you can do
A line for each side
When a deal is booked, the system creates a Seller line and a Buyer line, each referencing the client charged. Co-broker lines can be added by hand for a sub-broker’s share and are priced the same way. Each line carries a reference made from the deal number and its side, for example DL-0128-S.
How the rate card is chosen
For each line, the system looks at that client’s rate cards and keeps the ones that are not in Draft, are valid on the deal date and apply to that side or to either side.
- Commodity first. A card for the deal’s commodity is chosen before the client-wide card.
- Active first. An Active card is chosen before an Expired one, then the latest Effective From.
- Recorded. Rate Card Match shows Commodity-specific, Client-wide or Not found.
- Your choice kept. A card someone picked by hand for the same client is kept and marked Manual.
When no card applies, the line waits as Not found. Adding or changing a card for that client prices those waiting lines; lines already priced keep their card.
The calculation on the line
The line shows the deal value and quantity, the card’s rate percent, per-MT rate, flat fee and minimum, and the result.
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Calculated commission | Larger of value × rate ÷ 100 + quantity × per-MT rate + flat fee, and the minimum |
| Adjustment | Entered by Accounts for an agreed discount or extra charge |
| Final commission | Calculated commission + adjustment |
| Outstanding | Final commission − received |
The deal adds up its lines into total commission, effective commission percent and commission per MT, which is what the client analysis compares across clients.
What to agree during setup
Agree when Accounts may enter an adjustment and how the reason is noted. Decide who resolves lines with no rate card, and how co-broker shares are agreed and recorded.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Book deals for three clients with different cards: a percentage, a per-MT rate with a minimum, and a flat fee. Compare each line’s calculated commission with a hand calculation, including a small deal where the minimum applies. Book a deal for a client with no card, check the line shows Not found, then activate a card and check it is priced.
