What you can do

Interpret the reading before acting on it

A usage reading belongs to a particular asset and meter type. Technician records when the reading was taken, its value and unit, and the action limit that applies. Keeping those details together helps Maintenance Planner understand why equipment needs attention and whether a later reading can be compared with an earlier one.

The reading-capture action validates the submission and stores it against the selected asset. When the value reaches its action limit, the workflow flags that asset for maintenance. The team can then review the condition and prepare the work required for that equipment, using the reading as part of the operating context.

How the work is organized

  • Reading capture. Technician selects the asset and identifies the meter type. The reading date, value and unit describe the observation that was actually made, rather than a general note that service may be due.
  • Action-limit comparison. The submitted reading is evaluated against its action limit. Reaching the limit changes the maintenance attention required for the linked asset, so the team should agree that threshold before using the action.
  • Planner follow-up. Maintenance Planner reviews the stored reading and the asset’s state. The next operating decision is to prepare and authorize the appropriate maintenance work for the observed condition.

What to agree during setup

Choose consistent meter names and units. A reading in operating hours should not be compared with a reading in cycles simply because both contain numeric values. Agree who may set an action limit and how the team will validate it against the equipment’s service practice.

Decide how a Technician identifies the asset before recording a reading, especially where similar machines sit together. Confirm the input rules for dates and values during setup, and explain how staff should correct an erroneous observation through the approved operating process. Review the stored evidence before using it to justify a maintenance request.

Check the handoff on an actual case

Use an operating-hours meter on a portable compressor. Technician confirms the asset tag, enters the meter type and unit, and records a value below the agreed action limit. Check that the reading is saved against the correct compressor and that its date is understandable to the planner.

Next, submit a reading at the action limit. Confirm that the stored observation retains the limit used for the comparison and that the linked asset is flagged for maintenance. Maintenance Planner reviews the reading and prepares the work required for the condition. The resulting request should refer to the same asset throughout authorization and service.

Also try a reading with an invalid asset reference or a value rejected by the configured validation rule. The action should not produce an apparently valid observation against unrelated equipment. Finish by reviewing earlier readings with the same meter type and unit so the team understands what the register can tell them.

What your team sees

  • Condition Reading Register — Dated observations with the asset, meter type, value and unit.
  • Meter Readings With Action Limit — Readings with a positive action limit available for the maintenance review.
  • Asset Register — The operating state of the equipment associated with each observation.

Follow the work through

Rehearse Condition to maintenance attention, then continue through Warranty to authorized work when maintenance is prepared.
