What you can do

Organize the physical handoff

The induction plan gives Inventory Clerk a way to connect an arriving load with its next storage handoff. A transfer records the carrier, transfer number and status, with an arrival date, induction station and seal reference where relevant. Its induction slots identify the location and time of each planned stop, ordered by sequence.

Handling units describe the totes, pallets or other units being handled. Each has a tote code, item, quantity and current location, together with a custody owner and movement status. These records help the team explain what is waiting at induction and who is responsible for it. A stock movement provides the separate evidence that changes the recorded lot balance.

How the work is organized

  • Load context. Maintain the transfer number and carrier so the team can identify the arriving work. Scheduled, Arrived, Unloading, Loaded and Departed describe its progress; Cancelled preserves an abandoned transfer’s state.
  • Slot sequence. Plan the stop time and location against the transfer. Use Planned, Confirmed, Arrived, Completed or Missed to describe the slot’s current state without treating the scheduled time as a measured arrival time.
  • Custody. Keep each handling unit’s owner and location understandable at handoff. Available, In Transit, Loaded, Staged, Held and Damaged distinguish the handling conditions the clerk can record.

What to agree during setup

Agree how the team identifies a transfer when the carrier arrives and who checks a seal reference. Establish the meaning of an induction station name before importing a load plan. The clerk should be able to find the matching location without guessing from a free-text abbreviation.

Define when a handling unit changes custody and who updates its status. A damaged tote requires an operational decision about what happens next; its status must remain visible while the team resolves that decision. Agree how a missed induction slot is rescheduled and which person updates the plan. Record the new plan without presenting an old scheduled time as evidence of actual arrival.

Check the handoff on an actual case

Use a transfer carrying a tote of components to an induction station. Inventory Clerk confirms the planned slot, records the arrival context and identifies the handling unit’s custody owner. Ask the next clerk to locate the tote using its code, item and location rather than a verbal description.

Repeat with a missed slot and a damaged handling unit. Inventory Supervisor should be able to distinguish the planning exception from the stock action awaiting authorization. Confirm that changing a slot to Completed or a tote to Staged has not been treated as proof that the lot balance changed. Inspect the movement evidence separately when execution occurs.

What your team sees

  • Load Stops Schedule — Sequenced slot times and locations for induction planning.
  • Handling Units Register — Tote or pallet quantity, location, custody owner and condition.
  • Loads Board — Load records with carrier, induction station and current status.
