What you can do
Put item context on the deal
A sales opportunity can hold lines for the items a customer is discussing. Each line records an item name, quantity and offered unit price, with an optional product link and discount percentage. A product record holds a name, SKU, list price, active flag, description and category. This gives a brand a shared reference for what the team sells while allowing a line to preserve the wording used in a particular conversation.
The line is part of an opportunity. It records the offer being discussed with the customer. In a case about a new product range, the owner can add separate lines for the items and quantities under consideration, then keep the expected opportunity value current. The brand should decide how sales checks that expected value against the line details before submitting a proposal.
How the work is organized
- Product reference. Admin maintains the active product list, SKU, category and list price for a consistent starting point.
- Deal lines. Sales Representative writes the actual item name, quantity, unit price and optional discount on the opportunity.
- Decision context. Sales Manager reads the lines with expected value, account and close date to understand the scope behind a pipeline number.
What to agree during setup
Agree which items belong in the product list and when a one-off item can be entered without a product reference. Use the category values for the offerings they actually describe. Decide who changes list prices and how a sales owner records an offered price that differs from the list price. The line’s unit price and discount are editable context; review the offer in the team’s normal commercial process before treating an opportunity as a committed sale.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Suppose a retail account is considering a core product alongside training. The owner adds a line for each item, sets the quantity and offered unit price, and links a product where the catalog has one. The expected value on the opportunity is then checked against the working offer. If a line changes after the customer conversation, the owner updates the deal and tells the Sales Manager what changed. A proposal submission logs email activity and a receipt, so the team can distinguish the sent discussion from a later edit to the lines.
Rehearse an inactive product as well. The team should make an explicit decision about whether it still belongs on a current offer. Inspect the line text, the optional product link and the opportunity’s expected value together. The product’s list price remains a reference, and the opportunity line remains the record of what was discussed on that deal.
What your team sees
- Opportunity Item Lines — Sales reviews each discussed item, quantity and offered price with its parent opportunity.
- Proposals in Progress — Sales reviews the account and next step before discussing the offered items again.
Follow the work through
The proposal submission process shows when the item discussion becomes a tracked sales action. The data model shows how each line belongs to an opportunity.
