What you can do
Plan the material behind the promise
An approved garment order creates a production question: which material and capacity will satisfy its quantity by the requested date? Production Planner reviews customer lines and forecasts within a planning horizon. The master schedule keeps the planned quantity, warehouse and available-to-promise position together. Material planning compares bill requirements with free inventory and open supply, then separates proposed production from proposed purchasing. Shortages stay visible with a responsible person and need date.
How the work is organized
- Demand intake. Review the approved order and its positive line quantities. Confirm the finished-goods warehouse and responsible employee before carrying each eligible line into the master schedule.
- Supply suggestions. Compare required material with stock after allocation and with open purchase and work orders. Review Work and Purchase suggestions separately so an expected delivery does not become an assumed production completion.
- Exception ownership. Assign shortages and expediting work to a named planner. Keep the quantity and need date visible while the buyer or floor team resolves the supply issue.
What to agree during setup
Choose the planning horizon and explain how forecasts are consumed. Review the period start and end dates with the team responsible for customer demand. Decide how Demand, Planning and Open fences affect the daily planning discussion. Map each planning employee to the correct account for personal queues.
Agree who reviews the current suggestion set and who can firm, release or cancel an item. Complete that review before publishing another set. Decide how the buyer reports changed supply expectations so the planner can revisit the relevant shortage rather than assuming that a purchase request has resolved it.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Take an approved order for a garment style whose yarn requirement exceeds free stock. Production Planner checks the order lines and the bill, then compares on-hand and allocated quantities in the intended warehouse. Follow the resulting demand into the master schedule and inspect the planned Work and Purchase suggestions.
Ask Buyer to explain the proposed purchase quantity and need date. Keep the shortage open until the next action is clear. If the supplier cannot meet the date, the planner reviews the production implication and the related exception. A garment size balance can help explain the style requirement during this discussion; customer order quantities remain the basis of the demand review.
Repeat demand intake for the same approved order. Confirm that the existing demand remains identifiable without another set of demand rows. Then attempt another planning publication while suggestions are still Proposed. Resolve the previous set deliberately before continuing. At the end of the rehearsal, every outstanding shortage should have an owner who can explain what happens next and when the decision is needed.
