What you can do

Give production a clear material basis

Production Planner defines the product, its bill of materials and the sequence of operations needed to make it. Yarn consumption, fabric length and garment output can use different stocking units. The bill records each component quantity and unit, while the routing identifies the work center and expected setup and run time. Review these details before an order reaches the floor so the team can explain the material requirement behind the production plan.

How the work is organized

  • Product identity. Maintain the stock code, item type and stocking unit for raw material, intermediate products and finished goods. Identify items that require lot control before planning their first material issue.
  • Material requirements. Keep bill versions and effective dates alongside the component quantity and scrap allowance. Use the version intended for the product being made, and check every component’s unit.
  • Operation sequence. Number the routing operations in working order. Record the work center and time basis, and identify the operations that require quality checks so the inspector can prepare the appropriate inspection work.

What to agree during setup

Bring a current bill for a representative textile product and walk through it with the person who makes that product. Confirm whether quantities are expressed per garment, per length or per weight. Agree the meaning of the scrap allowance and check that staff use the same basis when reporting consumption.

Choose the bill and routing versions for the pilot. Name the Approver responsible for master-data decisions and explain when a design improvement, supplier discontinuation or quality finding requires an engineering change. Include the effective date and cost effect in that discussion.

Check the handoff on an actual case

Use a garment product whose bill consumes yarn by weight. Production Planner checks the component quantity against the stocking unit and follows the route through the relevant work centers. Verify the bill’s effective window before selecting it for the work order. Ask Shop Floor Supervisor to explain the operation sequence using the same product and route.

Next, propose a material change following a quality finding. Describe the affected product and bill, record the reason, and move the change from Draft through Defined and Assessed. Approver reviews the assigned decision before the change reaches Approved. Production Planner can then coordinate application and verification with the people responsible for the affected work.

Rehearse an incomplete product master as well. The team should resolve the incomplete attributes before approval proceeds. If someone repeats a master-change request while the original decision remains pending, use that existing decision rather than opening another review for the same product. Check the jobs already underway before applying the new version to later work.

What your team sees

  • Active BOM Versions — Active product bills with their version and effective window for release preparation.
  • Production Schedule — Jobs whose selected bill and route need to match the intended product and production window.

Follow the work through

Use demand to released supply to turn the engineering basis into a plan. Rehearse the first bill during implementation.

What it keeps track of

Data model
Products
Catalog of all items: finished goods, sub-assemblies, raw materials, components and consumables.
Bill of materials
BOM header - the recipe for producing a given product.
BOM components
Each raw or sub-assembly consumed to build the parent product.
Routings
Routing header - the sequence of operations required to build a product.
Routing operations
Each operation in the routing sequence.
Engineering change orders
Groups the item, bill and routing edits that land together.
Work centers
Machines, cells and assembly stations where operations are performed.
Approvals
One decision on a requisition, purchase order, count variance, change order or supplier invoice.

Who uses it

Permissions
Production Planner
Maintains product and engineering records.
Approver
Reviews assigned master-data and engineering decisions under the authority agreed during setup.
Shop Floor Supervisor
Helps check whether the routing matches actual production work.
