What you can do

Give permission a named interval

The permit names its work order, type, issuer and validity dates. Permit Issuer can issue an Approved permit after the interval is validated. The planner’s authorization action looks for an Approved permit tied to the order and covering today. That check places the permit inside the work planning decision rather than leaving it as an unrelated document beside the order.

How the work is organized

  • Prepare. Permit Issuer identifies the work order and the type of permission required.
  • Issue. The issuer validates the start and end of the permission interval and approves the permit.
  • Close. The issuer closes the referenced permit after the permitted activity is complete.

What to agree during setup

Agree which work types require which permit type and who is allowed to issue each one. The permit record contains the issuer as a team member, so team identities should be ready before the first live approval. Choose how long an interval should remain valid for an extended job. A permit issued for another order or outside today’s interval cannot satisfy the scheduling check.

Permit Issuer and Maintenance Planner have different responsibilities. The issuer approves the permit and can later close it. The planner verifies that authorization before moving the work order to Approved and Scheduled. Technician should consult the active permit while preparing the work, and Maintenance Manager should check it during a disputed closeout.

Check the handoff on an actual case

A technician is asked to inspect an electrical panel. Maintenance Manager records an Inspection order against the panel asset. Permit Issuer chooses the permit type, records a valid start and end date, and issues an Approved permit linked to that exact order. Maintenance Planner confirms the date window covers today, then assigns the technician and schedules the order. The technician checks the order and permit before starting.

After the inspection is accepted, Permit Issuer closes the permit by its record identity. The register still shows the permit’s former interval and issuer for review. If the work is delayed past the approved interval, the team should resolve the permission before scheduling another session. A changed order date does not extend the permit’s dates.

What your team sees

  • Safety Permit Register — The permit register shows the linked order, issuer and validity dates.
  • Active Safety Permits — Approved permits let the planner check the authorization window.
