What you can do

Start with a meter the team can recognize

A factory energy review begins with the identity of the meter that produced the observation. Admin links each meter to its operating site and records the energy type, unit and reading mode. Meter Operator uses that register when entering readings. Energy Manager can then trace an unusual observation back to the correct location and decide whether it is suitable for consumption review.

A cumulative reading and an interval reading require different interpretation. The reading mode belongs with the meter so the team can agree how observations become consumption. Keep the site timezone clear before bringing in historical observations. A date interpreted differently by the source and the receiving team can place otherwise reasonable energy use in the wrong operating period.

How the work is organized

  • Meter identity. Admin maintains the meter number and site link. Meter Operator checks that identity before entering an observation, especially where nearby production areas use similar labels.
  • Observation quality. Meter Operator records the reading time and value together with the quality flag. Estimated, Missing and Invalid remain meaningful distinctions during review; they should not disappear into a general consumption total.
  • Reviewer decision. Energy Manager examines the observation after validation checks. Rejected entries retain a reason so the operator knows whether to correct the meter reference, the recorded time or the value before presenting the evidence again.

What to agree during setup

Decide who maintains the meter register and who reviews observations. Agree which source identifies each physical meter, how its unit is expressed and how estimated observations are handled. If observations come from a meter gateway, configure that connection with the same identifiers used by the operating team. Review a sample from each reading mode before loading a longer history.

Agree how a corrected observation is distinguished from a new observation. The reviewer needs to understand what changed and why the new value is acceptable. Keep source material available for that discussion. Use rejection notes to explain the specific issue instead of asking the operator to repeat an entire day’s collection without direction.

Check the handoff on an actual case

Take an estimated observation from a meter serving a finishing area. Meter Operator confirms the physical meter and explains the estimate. Energy Manager checks the reading time against the site’s operating period and reviews whether the observation can support the intended analysis. If the value is negative or belongs to another meter, return it with a clear correction request.

Repeat the exercise with the corrected observation. Confirm that its quality flag still describes how the value was obtained and that the validation result reflects the correction. Then open the consumption interval that the team intends to review. The handoff is ready when the reviewer can explain the observation and its use without relying on an undocumented verbal assurance.

What your team sees

  • Meter Reading Review — Inspect observations with their quality flag, recorded value and validation outcome.
  • Reading Exceptions — Find rejected observations and the reason each needs attention.
  • Active Sites — Check the location and timezone behind an operating meter.

Follow the work through

Use Reading to consumption to rehearse the reviewer handoff, then follow the implementation phases for the first site.
