What you can do

Explain the rate behind the cost

Cost Analyst maintains energy tariffs by site, with an effective start and end, a rate per unit and the unit to which that rate applies. During cost review, the analyst matches accepted consumption to the applicable site rate. Energy Manager can then discuss an increase in energy cost with the underlying consumption and rate assumptions visible.

A tariff that began earlier is a candidate for the review, but its end date still matters. The analyst checks the complete effective period before applying a rate. This is especially useful when an operating interval spans a tariff change or when several tariffs describe different units at the same site.

How the work is organized

  • Site rate preparation. Cost Analyst enters the effective period and rate using the same unit convention that the team will use for consumption comparisons. The site link keeps the rate attached to its intended operating location.
  • Consumption selection. Energy Manager supplies validated consumption. Cost Analyst follows each meter to its site and checks that the selected interval belongs within the period under review.
  • Cost explanation. Cost Analyst compares compatible quantities and rates using the agreed calculation. Where the period or rate is ambiguous, the analyst resolves that ambiguity before presenting a calculated amount as part of the operating total.

What to agree during setup

Agree where tariff information comes from and who is responsible for updating effective dates. Establish the monetary basis used in the rate and the reporting convention used to display calculated costs. Review the treatment of an interval crossing a rate boundary, including the evidence needed to divide its quantity between the relevant periods.

Set up the cost report with a clear selection rule for site, unit and effective dates. Test an ordinary interval alongside a boundary case. If results are passed to accounting, agree that connection and its receiving owner during setup. Keep the originating energy interval and tariff identifiable when the cost leaves the operational review.

Check the handoff on an actual case

For a rehearsal, use a validated interval of 1,200 kWh and a matching site tariff of 0.14 in the team’s agreed currency per kWh. Place the entire interval inside that tariff’s effective period. Cost Analyst should reproduce a cost of 168 under the configured quantity-times-rate calculation and identify the interval and tariff used. Energy Manager checks the accepted quantity behind that result.

Next, use an interval that crosses a rate change. Resolve the quantity belonging to each rate period from the agreed evidence before calculating its cost. Repeat with a tariff expressed per M wh against consumption recorded in kWh. Keep that comparison unresolved until the conversion is agreed and tested. The reviewer should be able to explain why the ordinary case has a cost and why the other cases still need attention.

What your team sees

  • Effective Tariffs — Review rates whose effective start has arrived, then check the end date for the period being assessed.
  • Validated Consumption — Select accepted quantities and their actual meter intervals.

Follow the work through

Follow Consumption to production cost, then agree any accounting handoff through Systems to connect.
