What you can do

Set the coverage scope

Coverage lines hold line numbers, revision, coverage code, limit, deductible, exclusion and effective window for each policy. The Insurance Coordinator keeps each line linked to its parent policy. A reviewer can compare the coverage effective at a loss date with the policy revision that was issued. A limit is different from the amount eventually approved on a claim; the insurer’s decision records that amount separately.

An endorsement records a later change with an effective date, revision, reason, carrier receipt and approving identity. Keep the earlier line and endorsement history when coverage changes. Replacing the current line without a trail would make a past claim hard to assess against its original scope. The carrier receipt is an external reference to reconcile, not a substitute for the policy’s reviewed revision.

How the work is organized

  • Line scope. Capture code, limit, deductible and exclusion for the policy revision.
  • Timing. Compare effective dates with the loss date before assessing a claim.
  • Change trail. Keep endorsement reason and carrier receipt with the revised policy.

What to agree during setup

Agree how coverage codes are named, who may enter exclusions and how an endorsement takes effect. Decide whether a change requires a new review decision and which carrier result supplies the receipt. If another system owns the definitive policy wording, choose a clear handoff for that wording and retain the applicable reference on the local policy.

Consider a pet with a claim on the day before an endorsement takes effect. The reviewer needs the prior coverage line and its effective window, even though the current policy now displays the revised limit. The team should be able to explain the difference using the records, not memory of an email.

Check the handoff on an actual case

Open a policy with an earlier and later coverage revision. Check that each line points to the same parent and carries the appropriate revision. Follow the endorsement to its effective date, change reason and carrier receipt. Have the underwriter identify which line applied to the earlier loss date and which applies after the change. If the answer requires overwriting an old row, stop and agree a safer change procedure before daily use.

What your team sees

  • Policy Coverages — Review effective coverage lines with limits and deductibles.
  • Issued Policies — Open the policy that owns the coverage and endorsement trail.

Follow the work through

Follow policy setup and claim review as the record moves from preparation to a decision. Use the data model to map each handoff to its parent record.
