What you can do
Metering and energy in daily work
Meters belong to sites and identify an energy type, unit and reading mode. A meter can use cumulative or interval readings. Meter observations store their reading time, value and a quality flag: Valid, Estimated, Missing or Invalid. Energy intervals carry a start, end, quantity, unit and review status for the same meter. Keeping readings and intervals separate lets the team see the original observation and the period considered for validation.
An Operations Reviewer examines exceptions and checks whether a reading suits the meter mode. The reviewer can compare the proposed interval with neighboring periods and choose whether the interval is Validated or Rejected. An estimated observation should stay visible as estimated during review. Staff who need an accepted energy quantity can use validated intervals while retaining access to the reading behind it. The meter link keeps a reading at the correct site.
How the work is organized
- Meter setup. Keep the installed site, measurement unit and reading mode with the meter.
- Source observations. Review reading time, value and quality flag before interpreting an energy period.
- Interval decision. Inspect the Received period and its neighboring periods before marking it Validated or Rejected.
What to agree during setup
- Meter identity. Agree meter numbers, energy types, measurement units and reading modes before bringing in observations.
- Reading quality. Define when an estimate needs a second check and how missing or invalid observations are investigated.
- Interval review. Have the reviewer confirm the time range, unit and quantity before accepting an interval.
Check the handoff on an actual case
A meter at one site reports a cumulative reading near a shift boundary. The Plant Operator records the value and reading time, and the reviewer finds it in the reading list. If the observation is flagged Estimated, the reviewer examines its source and neighboring values. The interval remains Received while the period and quantity are checked. Once the reviewer accepts the interval, its status moves to Validated; a rejected candidate remains available for investigation. The meter and site links prevent a reading at another facility from being interpreted as part of this sequence. At handover, ask the reviewer to compare the candidate’s start and end with the neighboring periods for that meter. A cumulative reset can make a simple difference misleading, so inspect the observation before accepting the quantity. If the quality flag is Missing or Invalid, leave that source condition visible while the team investigates it. The decision belongs on the energy interval, whose status records the review outcome.
