What you can do
Select the material balance that can supply the work
Inventory Controller selects material for the intended work order using the item and lot identity. Review on-hand quantity and reserved quantity at the relevant location before posting an issue. A shared lot label can appear in separate balances, so the selected record needs to remain clear when the team reconciles consumption.
The material issue action requires a work order marked Released or in progress and an eligible balance for the same item and lot. It compares the issue quantity with free stock: on-hand quantity minus reserved quantity. Success marks the issue Posted and reduces exactly the eligible balance once. The resulting issue and stock balance explain the material consumed by the work.
How the work is organized
- Lot eligibility. Select stock with the matching item and lot. Inspect location when several balances share a label and confirm the eligible identity used by the posting action.
- Free quantity. Subtract reserved quantity from on-hand quantity before comparing the request. Keep the opening balance available so Inventory Controller can explain the posting result.
- Supplier context. Buyer maintains supplier purchase orders and their item lines. Ordered and received quantities show the remaining commitment, while due date and current state help the team follow up.
What to agree during setup
Agree item units, lot naming and location conventions before loading opening stock. Resolve different source units before an issue is posted. Bring the actual posting and correction procedures to the pilot so Inventory Controller can explain what changes stock and how the original issue remains traceable when a correction is needed.
Agree how incoming stock is recorded and reconciled with supplier deliveries. A receiving-system connection is a setup choice. Buyer and Inventory Controller should identify the evidence that makes arrived material usable and how that relates to purchase progress. The purchasing view supports commitment review; material posting uses eligible inventory already available for the work order.
Check the handoff on an actual case
Use a Released housing work order and a component lot with 12 units on hand and 5 reserved. Post an issue for the 7 free units. Inspect the Posted result: the selected balance now has 5 units on hand, with the reservation unchanged. Replay the same posting and confirm that the successful issue preserves the original deduction.
Start again from the original balance and request 8 units, exceeding free stock by 1. The refusal should leave the balance unchanged and retain an understandable reason. If a similarly named lot exists elsewhere, identify the eligible balance instead of adding locations together by label. Ask Inventory Controller to explain the issue using the selected item, lot and stock identity.
Buyer then reviews a supplier commitment for the component. Compare ordered and received quantities and inspect the due date and state before deciding what needs follow-up. If the team expects that delivery to supply future work, agree the receiving evidence and stock preparation with Inventory Controller. Keep both people working from the same item identity when discussing the remaining commitment.
